
Frederick “Stepo” Stefanowicz, 87, a longtime resident of Cos Cob, CT peacefully passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 6th, 2016. Fred was born in Greenwich, CT on September 3, 1928 and was one of eight children born to the late Sofia (Poplaska) and Joseph Stefanowicz.
Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He grew up in Greenwich and graduated from Greenwich High School and enlisted in the Army. After his honorable discharge he returned home and started working for DeVoe Paint. Fred met and married his wife Marie (Porcheddu) of 42 years and raised his family in Cos Cob while working at Citibank for 20 years and most recently with the Dorothy Hamill Rink, in Greenwich. He enjoyed the sport of hockey from watching his son play to watching almost every NY Ranger game and attending many Greenwich High School games. He was an avid reader and loved to learn about history. In addition, he loved the outdoors, including camping and working in his garden. His most recent passion was watching his granddaughter, Julia grow up and dance.
Fred is survived by his children: Stacy, David (Jeanne) and one granddaughter, Julia. He is also survived by his sister, Julia Cox. Besides his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marie and his siblings; Edward, Chester, Henry, Bertha and Stanley Stefanowicz.
Visitation will be at Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich between the hours of 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 11. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Riverside, CT. at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday April 12. Interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich.
