George Warren Schiele

August 2, 1931 – July 5, 2025
Obituary of George Warren Schiele
IN THE CARE OF

Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home

George W. Schiele died suddenly of heart failure on July 5, 2025, in Winter Park, Florida. He was 93 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on August 2, 1931, to Emma Adele Gilliam and Paul Ellsworth Schiele, George moved with his family to Greenwich, CT, where he would call home for the next 57 years.

A man of discipline and achievement, George attended Carson Long Military Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania's College of Liberal Arts and Wharton School. He served his country with distinction as an Operations Officer for the US Air Force Air Defense Command from 1954-1956, continued as Captain in the USAF Reserves from 1957-1967, and was honorably discharged in 1967. His commitment to service extended throughout his life, including his attendance at the National Security Seminar at the United States Army War College in 2003.

George built his career in trust management, where his expertise and leadership were evident in his remarkable professional accomplishments. He served as president of nine companies, trustee of eleven trusts, managing partner of two partnerships, director of five companies, and vice president of two charitable trusts.

Beyond his professional success, George was a man who believed deeply in giving back to his community. His philanthropic spirit shone through his role as chairman of a non-trust company that provided an in-kind gift of LED lights for an entire school campus, saving nearly a quarter million dollars over the system's life cycle. He generously shared his time and talents through extensive board service with the Greenwich Transit District, the Bruce Museum, the Fairfield Orchestra, The Economic Club of New York, the Penn Club, and the Metropolitan Opera Club, among many others.

George's greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband and father. George was a voracious reader who had a great love of science, art and the opera and was known by all for his kindness, quick wit and fantastic sense of humor. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Schiele; his daughter Caroline Schiele; his sons Warren Schiele and Erick Schiele and his wife Nancy; and his cherished grandchildren Alexandra, Olivia, William, and Jack. He was predeceased by his parents.

A private memorial service will be held at St. John's Church in Winter Park, FL, on July 10, 2025.

A celebration of life service will be held in Greenwich, CT on August 5, 2025 by invitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made in his honor to the Hospital for Special Surgery.
