Gloria Skue Sacrison, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, September 25, in Greenwich, CT where she was born 89 years ago. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and grandmother who grew up in, and loved, Byram, CT. She lost her only sibling, a younger brother, Thomas Skue, at age 6. Her father, Thomas E. Skue, and mother, Sally E. Skue, also passed on before her, as did her dearly beloved husband of 24 ½ years, Alan R. Sacrison, formerly of Stamford, CT. They had two children, Linda E. Sacrison and Deborah S. Kupper.
She very much enjoyed her home, cooking/entertaining for close friends and family and playing the piano while everyone gathered around singing the popular tunes of the day. These were her most cherished memories, especially when she could celebrate with her family and friends their mutual Swedish heritage together with food, singing and dance. To further preserve that heritage, she was a long-time member of The Vasa Club of America, Three Crown Lodge #38, Stamford, CT, (a Scandinavian fraternal organization), and as a child and member of the club’s children's dance troop, Gloria and her friends had the honor of performing before the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Sweden.
Matriculating from Greenwich High School, Class of ’43, Gloria also graduated from secretarial school which led her to a job with American Cyanamid in Stamford. Here she became good friends with a co-worker who encouraged Gloria to write to her brother, Alan, who was in WWII over in Europe. They were about the same age, the war was ending soon and he would be coming home after being at the Battle of the Bulge and serving on the front lines as a medic. After dating and Alan graduating from the University of Connecticut, they married in October, 1950. They settled in Gloria’s family home in Byram where her mother, Sally Skue, still lived and this is where they started their family.
Gloria lovingly served in many capacities centered around her children’s growing years. Besides driving them to appointments and lessons of all kinds, she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and a Girl Scout leader where her children attended the same beloved elementary school she had: Byram School. She enjoyed all the family outings of winter sledding and ice skating on the Byram River with friends, and swimming at Byram Beach in the summer, along with the favorite family getaway, their yearly vacation on The Cape. Then the family moved to Riverside where Gloria enjoyed decorating her new home and her many walks at Tod’s Point. However, just six months shy of their 25th anniversary, her husband passed away at age 50 on the Bruce Golf Course. It was soon after, that the club arranged for life saving devices to be placed at each hole on the course. Prior to this time, Gloria had only been working part time. She now took a full time legal secretarial position with the law firm of Parker, Badger and Fisher in Greenwich, and later worked for the Town of Greenwich for 19 years as the Secretary for The Planning and Zoning Department, first under Jim Sandy and then Diane Fox. Here she took great pride in working for the town she loved and in the building from where she had graduated high school.
As she approached retirement, Gloria enjoyed traveling with friends to California, little trips up and down the Eastern coast and as far away as the country of Tunisia where she rode a camel! She also made many happy memories with her daughters during a trip back to their roots, traveling to Sweden, Norway and Denmark. A larger part of her life, though, was also spent happily caring for and enriching the lives of her four grandchildren, (Sarah, David, Olivia and Karin), sharing with them her love of Greenwich, never wanting to live anywhere else. She was invaluable to her daughters by being available to pick up her grandchildren from school and taking them to their meetings and appointments, and having them sleep over at her home, and delight in watching them grow.
All throughout her life, Gloria attended (was baptized and confirmed at) St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Williams Street in Byram, and also continued to worship when it moved to its Comely Avenue, Rye Brook, NY location. Then, seven years ago, Gloria became a resident of Nathaniel Witherell, where she enjoyed the re-discovery of seeing former school chums, coworkers and neighbors as co-residents. She enjoyed (and never missed) all of the programs there and also appreciated the wonderful caregivers that enriched her daily life. In the end, she was also lovingly cared for by the Hospice staff too, and the family wants to thank everyone involved in her care very much. She will be terribly missed by all her family and friends, but we know she is home safe now with our Lord. A Memorial will be planned at a future date. Burial is private.
