John Joseph Awdziewicz Jr.

John Joseph Awdziewicz, Jr., age 94, of Greenwich, CT, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026 after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Meriden, Connecticut to Anna and John Awdziewicz, Senior. Growing up as the middle child in a close-knit Polish community, John learned early on the value of deep family roots and community spirit. He was also a proud Veteran who honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

John lived life with an easygoing grace and a deeply generous spirit. He spent his career working with numbers, serving his community as both a dedicated math teacher and a trusted accountant and bookkeeper. He had a unique gift for making things add up, both on the chalkboard and in life. John also had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke — he was a true friend to all who knew him.

His generosity extended far beyond his career. When he retired, John became a passionate volunteer with the American Red Cross. When Hurricane Andrew struck Florida, John didn’t hesitate — he simply got into his car and drove all the way down south to assist families in need.

When he wasn’t volunteering or teaching, John loved to stay active. He was an avid fisherman who found true peace out on the water. He could also frequently be found jogging, playing tennis, or swinging a club on the golf course.

Above all, John loved a good celebration and was always up for a party. The absolute light of his life was his beloved wife, Martha. Together, they shared a beautiful 64 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and endless adventure. They shared a passion for live music and spent countless happy evenings listening to jazz, especially classic tunes from the Great American Songbook. He was a lifelong fan of Frank Sinatra, and like Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, John truly lived life “His Way,” and was a friend to all.

John was also a devout Catholic, having attended St. Agnes Church and St. Mary Catholic Church in Greenwich.

John was an incredibly proud and devoted family man. He is survived by his cherished wife, Martha; his two daughters, Sandra (Kenneth) Lippmann and Pamela (Joseph) McHugh; and his four grandchildren, Molly, Johnny, Strummer, and Neil. John absolutely loved being a doting grandfather — he enjoyed watching sports and attending school functions with his grandchildren. He is also survived by a wide circle of friends, neighbors, and former students. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and John Senior, and his two sisters, Barbara and Nancy.

A service and celebration of John’s life will be held on Thursday, July 16 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Greenwich, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Wallace Center of Greenwich. The family also asks that you simply raise a glass, cue up a favorite Sinatra tune, and celebrate a life beautifully lived.
