

John S. Engelhardt passed away Sunday March 3rd at his home, where he was a devoted husband to his wife Elissa for 35 years and loving father to his two daughters Cheryl and Renee. John was the son of Elizabeth Sherman Engelhardt and George Bliss Engelhardt, a Cornell graduate and research engineer at Bell Laboratories for 30 years. John was the grandson of Edith Bliss Engelhardt, whose family were well known manufacturers of ship’s clocks and chronometers. He had a love of cars, the sea and boating that stayed with him from childhood to his passing.
John’s associates described him as a brilliant engineer. He started his career as an undergraduate EE at Cornell University in 1962 working on the Cornell EEI 345 KV Underground Transmission Demonstration Program. He joined Anaconda Wire & Cable Co. in 1964 and was Chief Engineer, Power Transmission Engineering Center when he left Anaconda in 1975. John was a founder and President of Underground Systems Inc., a.k.a. USi, until this past year. John authored many IEEE Transactions Papers, held a number of patents and was instrumental in the development of a number of key technologies which improved the capacity, reliability and economics of electric power transmission systems. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE a number of years ago.
John will be remembered for his kindness and generosity to his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife Elissa and their daughter Cheryl and husband Silas Rossi, daughter Renee, his sister Julia Engelhardt Nichols and sisters- in – law Stephanie Bludau and Kristine Scordo.

Engelhardt’s name to Greenwich Adult Day Care- River House, 125 River Road Ext., Cos Cob, CT 06807 or Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047. A private service and reception for friends and family will be held Saturday, March 23rd at the Stanwich Congregational Church.
