John Arthur Lienhardt, 89, a longtime resident of Greenwich, Connecticut, passed away on September 30, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. He was born on February 23, 1937, in Greenwich, Connecticut, to the late Alfred and Erna Lienhardt.
John was the beloved husband of Elizabeth A. Lienhardt, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, father, and family man who loved his family deeply.
John graduated from Greenwich High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force, where he served as a flight engineer on C-47s.
A tremendously hardworking man, John spent much of his life working two jobs. He was a third generation upholsterer and, together with his wife and their two eldest sons, began the family business, Trade Upholstery, in Cos Cob. He took great pride in his craft and also shared his knowledge and skills by teaching upholstery to adults at night for over 25 years with Greenwich Continuing Education.
Outside of his work, John enjoyed antique cars, gardening, and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed taking long rides with his wife. He could often be found at Grass Island with a coffee in hand, sitting beside Liz and looking out at the water. These simple moments together were a cherished part of their life.
John loved his family, his craft, and his country. He will be remembered for his extraordinary work ethic, dedication to his family, pride in his craftsmanship, and deep devotion to his wife.
John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth A. Lienhardt; his sons, Ron Lienhardt and his wife, Bonnie, of Bethel, and Rod Lienhardt of New Jersey; and his daughter, Robyn Kechter and her husband, Brett, of Redding. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Rick Lienhardt.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Connecticut.
John will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.
