John Joseph Sudell

Born on September 10, 1941, John was the son and youngest child of the late Joseph Frank Sudell and Mary Reilly Sudell. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and neighbor whose steady presence, generosity, and deep commitment to family and community touched so many people.

John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force in the early 1960s. Following his service, he built a respected career as the owner of J.J. Sudell Plumbing and Heating. John’s business flourished for half a century, and his skill, friendliness, honesty, and reliability made him a beloved plumber all over Greenwich.

John was deeply committed to his family and loved them dearly. He was married to Helen (Lyn) Mulvaney Sudell of Greenwich for 59 years before she passed away in 2023, and John and Lyn raised four children, Lori, Lisa, Thomas and James, with great love. John dedicated his life to his children and loved all the time he spent with his grandchildren.

John was one of the most accomplished fishermen in Greenwich. He particularly enjoyed taking friends and family on The Suds for fishing trips or days on the water. He especially loved catching fluke all over the western Sound, as well as in Mattituck and Montauk. The Suds was like a home away from home for John and his family, and nothing made him happier than welcoming others onto his boat.

Everyone knew John in Cos Cob, and his office at the Riverscape Marina was a community gathering place where he always had a welcoming smile, a bite to eat, and a beverage for anyone who visited him. John loved to cook, and no one walked away hungry from a visit with John Sudell. John also believed in giving back to the community he loved. Over the years, he gave his time as a Greenwich Little League Coach and a Cub Scout Leader, and later in life he volunteered at Meals on Wheels and Neighbor to Neighbor with his wife Lyn.

John is predeceased by his wife Helen (Lyn) Mulvaney Sudell. He is survived by his sister Lynn Sudell Mottolese and her husband, Bill, his daughter Lori and her husband John Fiordelisi, his daughter, Lisa Sudell, and his two sons, Thomas Sudell and James Sudell and Daughter-in- Law Deirdre O’Grady. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family of grandchildren, family friends, and nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to The Alzheimer’s Association (Alz.org).
