Mary Elizabeth (Arton) Cooper, 62, of Greenwich, Connecticut passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, at Greenwich Hospital. Mary was born on May 19, 1954, in Sellersville, Pennsylvania to the late Catherine (Cummings) and Harry T. Arton. Mary is survived by her husband of 33 years, James D. Cooper, their children, Henry, Michael and Kate, and her sisters, Katherine Arton of Vero Beach, Florida, and Elizabeth Dyevich and Patricia Arton, both of Princeton, New Jersey, as well as by her brothers in law Thomas Dyevich of Princeton, New Jersey, and Richard Cooper of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and six nieces and nephews, Jack, Harry, Catherine and Aziza Dyevich of Princeton, New Jersey, and Chris and Jon Cooper of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Mary was preceded in death by her sister Dolores Arton of Greenwich Connecticut, who passed away in 2009. Mary is remembered as a devoted mother, sister, aunt and friend to all who were blessed to know her. A passionate reader and conversationalist on a bewildering variety of subjects, Mary was a warm and exceptionally kind person who always put the interests of others ahead of her own. Her children were the center of her universe and provided her with endless joy. The oldest of five sisters, Mary counseled family members on every issue that came up in their lives whether fleeting or significant, and always knew what to do and what to say. Mary graduated from North Penn High School in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, received her B.A. degree in environmental studies from the University of Wisconsin and worked as an urban planner for the City of Chicago before marrying and having children.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday October 10th, at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, Connecticut. Funeral services will be at the Stanwich Congregational Church, 202 Taconic Road, Greenwich, Connecticut, at 1pm on Tuesday October 11th.
