Longtime Greenwich resident, Mary McCarroll Taverna was born in the Dublin, Ireland on December 3, 1931. She was the second oldest of five children. After attending The University College Dublin, she moved to New York City in 1959, where she worked at Foster Wheeler on Fifth Avenue. She met her husband to be on a flight from New York to Shannon, Ireland in June of 1960, and exactly thirteen months later they were married, moved to Bronxville, NY, and then to Greenwich, CT in 1972 where they raised their family of three daughters.
In addition to her colorful family life, she was the President and Financial Principal of Independent Investments, Inc. Mary was a devout catholic, with an unwavering devotion to The Virgin Mary, and attended Mass daily. She was a lover of fashion, jewelry and champagne. She was an accomplished pianist and continued her studies into her adult years. Her elegant appearance and red hair belied her impish nature, and her need for speed, where her children recalled intercepting the mail before another speeding ticket could be discovered by her husband. Whether invited to or not, she wouldn’t hold back in offering either praise, or rapier-like commentary. She and her husband traveled all over the world, returning three times a year to her birth home of Dublin. She was an ardent supporter of St. Marys Catholic Church, countless charities, and Convent of the Sacred Heart where all her daughters attended K through 12.
She is survived by her daughters Rosemary Taverna, Anne Kundapoor, Juliet Taverna-Nahm her beloved granddaughter Alexis Newman, her brother David McCaroll of San Francisco and sister Eileen Fingleton of Dublin, and countless nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 28th at 11:00AM at St. Pauls’s Catholic Church in Greenwich, CT. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich, CT.
