Mary Sutter Zick, of Key Largo, Florida, beloved wife of nearly 66 years of John Walter Zick passed away on Monday afternoon. She is survived by her husband, two daughters Sharon Zick Rieger and Catherine Zick Manning, a daughter in law, Donna Poole Zick, two sons in law, Brian Louis Rieger and George Taylor Manning, six grandchildren and a great granddaughter. Mary and John's son, John Walter Zick, Jr. pre-deceased his mother in 1998.
Mary began her life in Evanston, Illinois as the daughter of Harry Blair Sutter and Elsie Paul Sutter. She attended Roycemore School and Northwestern University.
Much of Mary's adult life was devoted to helping others through volunteer service. She served with the Junior League of Chicago as a Senior Vice President, the Garden Club of America, and the Greenwich Garden Club, where she was honored in 1986 with the Garden Club trophy for the most note worthy accomplishment by a member during that year. Mary also worked with Greenwich Hospital Hospice Services, Girl Scouts, and as President of the Garden Group at Ocean Reef. She also volunteered to arrange flowers monthly for the Chapel at Ocean Reef.
Mary co-founded the Winnetka Presbyterian Church and brought Lloyd John Ogilvie, later to become Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, to Winnetka to serve as its first pastor.
Mary was often described as the most beautiful woman in the room, not only for her outer beauty but for her inner grace, beauty and love for others which shone through.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions can be made to the Medical Center Foundation at Ocean Reef, 50 Barracuda Lane, Key Largo, FL 33037 or to the Ocean Reef Chapel Foundation, P.O. Box 226, Saint Augustine, FL 32086-0226.
