Maryann G. O'Rourke

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward F. O'Rourke. She is survived by her four sons: Edward J. O'Rourke of Wardsboro, VT; John P. O'Rourke and his wife Jill Gagne of WillistonVT; Charles G. O'Rourke and his wife Robina of Portland, ME; and Andrew K. O'Rourke and his wife Tracey of Wayland, MA. She is also survived by step-grandson Brian Letourneau and five grandchildren: Katherine, Phoebe, Gregg, Sidney, and Brendan.

Maryann was born in Swampscott, MA, and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1956. She went on to Wheelock College, earning a degree in early childhood education in 1960. It was while waitressing one summer at a hotel on Cape Cod that she met her future husband, Eddie. The two married in August of 1960, and Maryann took her first teaching position in Nahant, MA. The young couple made their home in Marblehead while raising their family, before moving to Greenwich, CT in 1969, where Maryann would live for almost 50 years.

After many years as a homemaker, Maryann returned to her career in early childhood education, serving as Director of the North Baptist Church Nursery School in Port Chester, NY. She later became Executive Director of Children's Day School in Greenwich, CT, a role she held from 1988 to 2009. Even in retirement, her passion for education never waned — she served as interim director at the Greenwich YMCA early childhood center and worked as an educational consultant to five preschools in town.

Maryann was a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children Childcare and Parenting Council. She generously gave her time to numerous causes close to her heart, including teaching parenting skills to low-income mothers through Malta House in Norwalk, CT, and serving on the Child Protection Team of Greenwich. She was also deeply involved in St. Mary's Parish in Greenwich, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, religious education teacher, and member of the scholarship committee.

Among her proudest endeavors was her role as a Dame of Malta, traveling each year to Lourdes, France for the Order of Malta's international pilgrimage to care for the sick and disabled.

Maryann spent her final years in Portland, Maine, close to family and enjoyed easy access to her favorite whole belly fried clams.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on September 25, 2026 at St. Mary’s Parish in Greenwich, CT.
