Maureen L. Morris (née Lawn), longtime resident of Greenwich, passed away on December 6, 2023 at the age of 90. She was welcomed into Heaven by her beloved husband Joe Morris, her parents Beatrice and Jack Lawn, her parents-in-law Annette and Joseph Morris, her daughter Mary, her sons-in-law Dermot McMahon and Thomas Conlin, and many family and friends.
Born in Brooklyn on November 28, 1933, Maureen was the eldest child of Irish immigrants, and was raised in a brownstone on St. John’s Place, within walking distance of the Brooklyn Library, Museum and Botanical Gardens, and, of course, her beloved Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School. Graduating in 1951, Maureen went on to work and to take evening classes at a local college.
Maureen met the love of her life on the beach in Roxbury, Queens. She and Joe Morris married in 1954 at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Maureen followed Joe to Fort Hauchuca, Arizona where he served in the Army Signal Corps. They returned to Brooklyn in 1956 and continued to grow their family. Maureen and Joe raised six children in Hicksville (Long Island), Roxbury and Greenwich in a noisy, boisterous and loving home. Throughout her life, Maureen loved nothing more than a large family party!
Maureen worked as a home-maker in the earlier part of her married life, then joined the formal work force when her youngest child went to school full time. She worked at Dougherty & Dougherty Law Offices, AMAX Corporation and Community Centers of Greenwich, among others. While at AMAX, Maureen was awarded a full academic scholarship. Still a full-time employee, Maureen went to Pace University at night. She and her youngest child both graduated from college the same year! A busy woman, she never seemed too rushed.
Maureen also served as a Girl Scout leader, and CCD teacher, and once retired, a Eucharistic Minister and member of both the Centering Prayer group and the RCIA team at St. Paul’s RC Church. She enjoyed walking every day, to Glenville with her dog, at Greenwich Point with Joe, and later in life with a dear friend in the Milford area. She loved chatting with people she met along the way. Maureen was also an enthusiastic gardener, and always had a project going on!
Maureen and Joe moved to Maplewood in Orange, Connecticut later in life, and enjoyed the community there very much. She felt at home, welcomed and had many good friends.
Beloved mother and grandmother, sister and aunt, Maureen is survived by her children: Jeanne Conlin, Kevin Morris, Kathleen Morris and her husband Anthony Capriccio, Peggy Morris, Patricia Morris, Brian Morris and his wife Sarah, and grandchildren Ian and Kyle Conlin, Joseph, Sean, Ryan, Maureen and Nolan Morris. She is also survived by her brother Jack Lawn and his wife Virginia, her sisters Jeanette Darling and Marguerite Lawn and 17 much beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joe, her daughter Mary, her sons-in-law Dermot Mc Mahon (husband of Peggy Morris), and Thomas Conlin (husband of Jeanne Conlin), her brothers-in-law Michael Darling and Frank Morris, and her godson Kevin Lawn.
Joyful, optimistic and thankful, Maureen was enormously proud of her children and grandchildren and the family she and Joe created together.
