

Mildred Phillips Ramsdell, 95 Former resident of Charlestown in Catonsville, MD and most recently at the Atria of Darien in Darien, CT, Mildred “Millie” Ramsdell, 95, died on Friday evening, August 16, 2013, at Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on September 13 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, MD. A mass and burial will be held on Saturday, September 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Rose of Lima Church in Gaithersburg, MD. Mrs. Ramsdell was born June 6, 1918, in Schenectady, NY, to William George and Anna (Mann) Phillips. She graduated in 1941 from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and married Charles Benjamin Ramsdell on May 24, 1942, in Schenectady, NY. Married to an executive with General Electric then Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO), Mrs. Ramsdell lived with her husband and family in Towson, MD, Media, PA, Short Hills, NJ, Tyler, TX and Pittsburgh, PA. Mrs. Ramsdell was a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital and the Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind in Pittsburgh, PA. Following Mr. Ramsdell’s retirement, the couple enjoyed living in Annapolis, MD and later in Catonsville, MD in the retirement community of Charlestown where they made life-long friends. They traveled extensively in this country and around the world. Her residence for the past 11 months was the Atria of Darien. Her family wrote: “Millie’s generosity and wisdom were an inspiration to her family and friends. She lived her life with integrity and bravery.” She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Lawrence K. Hathaway of Riverside, CT; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Mariellen Garman Ramsdell of Pittsburgh, PA and W. Craig and Sally Turner Ramsdell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Lesley Hathaway and Pablo Cagnoni of San Francisco, CA, Diane and Greg Sedlock of Darien, CT, Charles Benjamin Ramsdell III of Chicago, IL and Cameron D. Ramsdell and fiancé Jennifer Ingersoll of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren Charlie, Tate and Reed Sedlock of Darien, CT and Sabine Cagnoni of San Francisco, CA; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ramsdell was preceded in death by her husband, C. Benjamin, her three older brothers, and sisters-in-law Ellie Ramsdell McNally, Barbara Ramsdell Jones and Anne Ramsdell Kingsley. The family has expressed their wish that gestures of sympathy in lieu of flowers be made by charitable donations to the “Johns Hopkins University,” c/o Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 436, Baltimore, MD 21201 with a note indicating the donation is in memory of Mildred Ramsdell for the benefit of Parkinson’s Disease research.
