Born in Stamford, CT, he was the beloved son of Walter R. Steele and Rose Lesko Steele. Dick’s foundation of faith and learning began early at St. Catherine of Siena school. He went on to earn a full academic scholarship to Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle, NY, and later attended the University of Connecticut, where he proudly became a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and the ROTC program. Following his studies, Dick honorably served his country in the United States Army.
Dick was a man not only deeply committed to his Catholic but to his community and youth sports. He dedicated over 25 years as a baseball coach, mentoring players across the Senior Babe Ruth Hoyt Bruins, Little League, and collegiate levels. His significant contributions to local sports and leadership were recognized with the prestigious Old Timers Award.
Professionally, Dick spent a distinguished career in the Cosmetic Packaging Industry. His dedication, expertise, and professional integrity earned him the highly regarded BIMS Award, recognizing his excellence and leadership within the field.
Above all his achievements, Dick’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Mary Jo; and his four loving children, Anne Steele Kochevar (Dan), Judy Steele Clarke (Eddie), Susan Steele, and Matthew Steele (Samantha). He leaves behind a legacy of love through his five grandchildren, Kyle Kochevar, Brooke Kochevar Maher (Kyle), Jackson Steele, Dyer Steele, and George Clarke; and his great-granddaughter, Hanora Maher. He is also survived by his older brother, Walter R. Steele, Jr., as well as two nieces and one nephew.
