Cecil Clifton Cooper of Greenwood passed from this life on October 4, 2013 in Charleston. Cecil was born January 23, 1927 in Paris, Arkansas to his parents Henry Curtis Cooper and Truie Pearl (Harger) Cooper.
He was an Army veteran of World War II; he worked in the coal mines around Paris, and retired as tool and die supervisor from Ladish Pacific in California. He often said “retirement was the best job he ever had.” He was a big baseball fan and umpired little league in California. He loved to fish and hunt – the reason he and his second wife, Virginia, moved to Greenwood from California in 1999. He served one term as Greenwood City Council member. He was a member of Saints Sabina and Mary Catholic Church in Jenny Lind.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol (Herman) Dunn and Sandia Sparks; the mother of his children, T. Mae Cooper; his step-sons, Rick (Chrisy) White, all of California and Tim (Rita) White of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Bryan and Jason Dunn, Sean Sparks, Stephanie, Jeff, Nichole and Diana White all of California; numerous great grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Savage of Branch; his nephew and caregiver, Philip (Cindy) Savage of Charleston; his nephews, Richard Savage (Cecilia), Christopher Savage (Tammy), Cecil Wayne (Sue) Crossno, Herb Crossno, J.C. Cooper of Oregon, Jerry Cooper and Billy Cooper; nieces, Mary (Harold) McLeroy, Dixie (Don) Boster and Cynthia Cooper; sister-in-law, Bonnie Cooper of California and numerous great nephews, great nieces and other friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Curtis Cooper; his mother and step-father, Lawrence A. and Truie Crossno; his brothers, Jerrel C. Cooper and Lawrence Crossno, Jr.; his brother-in-law, Robert Savage; his nephew, David and niece, Roberta Jean Savage. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Virginia (Norton) White and his step-daughter, Patricia Powell.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Charleston with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Rosary will be 7 p.m. on Tuesday at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel. Viewing will be Tuesday from 1 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6 – 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Richard Savage, Harold McLeroy, Cecil Wayne Crossno, Herb Crossno, Mike Locknar, Ben Toplikar, Pat Mixon and Brandon Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be James Gaston, Doyle Frost, Wayland Parker, Mike and Paulette Hodges.
