Following his Van Buren High School graduation, Layton worked for a period at Hickory Springs before proudly enlisting in the United States Navy. He served honorably and was awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Navy Good Conduct Award. Though an injury ultimately cut his military service short, he went on to build a long and fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service. As a maintenance employee, Layton found true professional joy; he genuinely loved his work, his daily routines, and the hands-on nature of his career.
Layton lived life with an adventurous and independent spirit. He was an avid skydiver, a passionate motorcyclist, and a skilled mechanic who could fix just about anything. A dedicated bicyclist, he found great joy as a rail-to-trail enthusiast, exploring the outdoors and traveling to new places. Layton also had a massive heart for animals, sharing his life with many cherished dogs and cats over the years. A man of faith, he was a dedicated member of the Northside Church of Christ.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Tammy Davis; his loving daughters, Amber Davis Shinkle and Autumn Davis; his cherished grandchildren, Scarlet Davis and Logan Shinkle; his sister, Pam Bennett; and his brother, Randy Davis. He also leaves behind a large circle of extended family members and many dear friends who loved him completely.
In addition to his parents, Layton was preceded in death by his brother, Stewart Sargent, and his sister, Bonnie Kay Reel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Artemis Project to honor Layton's lifelong love for animals. Contributions can be made online at: https://theartemisprojectrescue.org/donate-now/
A family held memorial service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, June 4 at Northside Church of Christ in Greenwood, Arkansas.
I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me, though he is dead, yet shall he live. John 11:25.
