Maria Cristina Norried passed away peacefully at her home in Greenwood, Arkansas, on March 7, 2026. Known affectionately as "Ria" by her brother and sisters, Maria was born in Los Angeles County, California on July 12, 1954, to Evangeline and Ignacio Arvizu. She grew up with a spirit that was both resilient and deeply compassionate. Her life was defined by that resilience and a heart that knew no bounds.
On December 30, 1979, Maria married the love of her life, John Norried, in Palos Verdes, California. Together, they built a family centered on the belief that "home" is wherever there is love. After having their children in Long Beach, the family moved to Greenwood in 1991, where she remained until her passing.
Maria’s life was not always easy, but she was a fighter through and through. She taught her children to stand up for their beliefs and was the ultimate cheerleader for those she loved.
Her home in Greenwood was a sanctuary; many beyond her immediate family—and even a few stray animals—called it their own over the years, a testament to the beautiful lesson in kindness she and John taught their children.
She was a vibrant, passionate, and thoughtful person who took time and care to create truly special memories for those she loved. Christmas was a favorite of hers, and she made it a magical experience for those around her.
Maria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, her mother, Evangeline and her sister, Norma Crow.
She is survived by her children, Alaina Rice (Greg) of Liberal, KS, Marcie Norried (Sam Plum) of Colorado Springs, CO and Adam and Jamie Norried of Greenwood, AR. She also leaves behind her step-children, Kelly Norried (Diane) of Lakewood, CA and Kristie Norried Sharp-Town (Chris) of Centralia, WA.
Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Olivia Norried and Jade Rice; her sisters, Carmen Arvizu of Edinburg, TX, Celia Camberos of Lemon Grove, CA and Anna Herrera of Long Beach, CA and her brother, Carlos Arvizu (Ana) of Downey, CA. She will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held in Maria’s honor at 2 p.m., Friday, April 10 at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, AR. There will be a gathering afterwards at McConnell until 5:00 p.m.
