Our beloved Aunt Doris Bernice Sandblast Bergman passed away on February 24, 2021 in Gresham, Oregon surrounded by her family’s love and support. She was 95 years old.
Graveside committal and burial will be held, Monday, March 8th at 2 pm, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Gresham, with a Celebration of Life gathering to be held in later Spring or early this summer. Please revisit her website for updates.
Doris was born June 15, 1925 in Portland, Oregon to Alfred and Rachel (Ericksen) Sandblast. She had 2 older brothers, James and Robert Sandblast, and 1 older sister, Jean. She and Jean were very close.
Doris attended Cottrell Grade School, Sandy High School. After school she went to San Francisco and started her career with the Federal Government. She moved back to the Portland area and then went to work for Bonneville Power Administration. There is where her good friend Marie Walsborn introduced her to her future husband, saying they would be perfect for each other. She married Albert Francis Bergman March 26, 1960, he passed away April 8, 1994. Al was working for the US Maritime Commission.
They spent almost 2 years living in Saipan Island while Al was working as merchant seaman 1st mate. They traveled to Guam, Japan and china for vacations while living there, then they moved back to Portland, Oregon. Doris went back to work at Bonneville Power and Al continued to work as a merchant marine. He would come home on various ports on the west coast.
Later years Doris was working for the US Civil Service Administration, Office of Personnel Management as a manager/supervisor. She was known to be called “Sandy” by her co-workers for her name Sandblast.
Before her marriage she went on several vacations with close girlfriends. They took a train trip around the US and she said by the time they were halfway home they were running short of cash so they pretty much lived on candy bars. Another trip was a cruise to Hawaii, Doris loved to have a good time! She would say I just want to have fun. She enjoyed going to Reno, Tahoe, and Las Vegas, She and Al would take their 2 dogs, Miniature Schnauzers, Duke and Duchess with them to Tahoe. She would go to Reno with her sister Jean Lundy and her husband Harold. In later years she went to Vegas, Reno, California and Utah with her niece Dawn and her husband, Dick.
She loved the holidays, especially Christmas! Being Norwegian, it was all about the food and delicious baked cookies and breads, Gathering together on Christmas Eve with brothers, sister, their wives, husband and children; a very fill house but so much fun and love. Doris is known for being a very exact and organized person; even requesting the time of day to be buried, She had so many close friends and played on bowling league, an 18 hole golf league and a 9 hole league which she had been active in until this last year.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her patents and brothers and sister.
Doris leaves behind many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
