

Portland resident Glenn Riley Gates passed away on October 1, 2010. He was 91. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, October 9 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham. Private burial will be at Lone Pine Cemetery in Wamic, Oregon.
Glenn was born March 23, 1919 in Mankato, Minnesota to Bert and Jean (Turner) Gates. When Glenn was 15 years old he moved to Oregon with his mother and three brothers upon his father’s death. He married Dorothy Bailey in 1940. Dorothy passed away in 1971 and he married Nadine Harvey in 1972. Glenn enlisted in the Air Force, becoming a pilot, and served from 1943 to 1945 during WWII. Upon his discharge in May of 1945, he went on to work as a millwright for a lumber mill in Sandy. He later worked for Crown Zellerbach, retiring in 1981.
Glenn was an avid fisherman and hunter. His claim to fame was catching a 52 pound salmon. He also enjoyed camping and would travel south to Indio, CA for the winter every year with Nadine. In his younger years, Glenn loved working on cars. Later in life, he enjoyed cutting wood, being the outdoorsman that he was. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. In life, Glenn loved people and didn’t know a stranger. He was outgoing, fun and always enjoyed having a good time. Most of all, Glenn loved his family.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wives and brothers, Keith Gates and Russell Gates. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra Ragsdale of Portland, OR; Mirth Miller of Ocean Park, WA; Lynne Ragsdale of Gresham, OR; brother, Thurston Gates of Tigard, OR; 4 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
