James F. Dixon

Dr.James Frederic Dixon, born June 8, 1933 in The Dalles Oregon to Floyd and Glaydes Dixon of Hood River transitioned on July 24, 2017. He was a Graduate of Hood River High School, Graceland College (A.A.) Central Missouri State (B.S.) University of Oregon (M.S.) and University of Northern Colorado (EdD).

Served in the US Army as a personal specialist for the 5th Infantry Division (company H) from 1956 to 1958 then served on the Selective Service Civilian Review Board.

He was an educator for 38 years, 34 of which were at David Douglas High School serving as Teacher, Coach, Activities Director, and Associate Principal. After his Oregon retirement he was a Principal at Tyee High School in the Skyline District in Washington.

Dr. Dixon was active on local, state and national committees during his professional career. The Confederation of Oregon School Administrators, and the McDonalds Corporation honored him as Vice Principal of the year in 1992.

He was raised in the Reorganized Latter Day St. Church and served many year as an Elder and Camp Director. Later he was active at Parkrose United Methodist Church serving on various boards playing in the bell choir and coaching a youth basketball team.

As a young man he was active in Boy Scouts and ran the Hood River Swimming Pool. This involvement continued in scouts while he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 606 of The Columbia Pacific Council for 6 years.

A member of Parkrose Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Al Kader Shrine (Greeters),

he dedicated much of his time to the Shrine hospital. He was involved for many years in the North South Shrine football game first as a Team Manager and finally as the Director. He was also on the Shrine committee for their annual Golf Tournament and a charter member of the Gateway Elks.

His parents, brothers, Jerry and Robert, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Beverly, his son John, grandchildren Teagan and Nathaniel

Sister in law Heidi, Nephews David and Michael, and Niece Anja.

A memorial service will be held at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham Oregon on July 31st 2017 at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers charitable donations can be made to his two favorite charities the Shrine Hospital of Portland (3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road Portland, OR. 97239) and Snow Cap (PO Box 160 Fairview, OR 97024).
