John was born on November 27, 1912 in Willamette, the fifth of 13 children of Henry Steiner and Molly Jaster.
Early in his youth, the family moved by horse and wagon to Brightwood so his father could build log cabins in the Mt. Hood area. In his sophomore year at Sandy High School, John left to work with his father. In 1945, he was honorably discharged and returned to his home in Brightwood where he began a career logging and once again returned to building log cabins and homes.
John met and married Frances Brewer in 1948 and began a family that included three sons and two stepdaughters. John continued to actively work building homes and log structures until he retired in about 1990. In 2011, John was honored by the U.S. Forest Service for his contribution to the construction and maintenance of Timberline Lodge.
