John passed away at his Corbett home, surrounded by family that loved him dearly. He is survived by his wife Sandra; sons, Jason and Eric; daughter-in-laws, Wendy and Brie; grandchildren, Indéa, Cruz, and Mila; and sisters, Sally, Patricia, and Marilynn.
John was born and raised in Oregon. He spent most of his youth growing up in Corbett with his parents and five siblings on their family’s dairy farm, before moving into Gresham and graduating from Reynolds high school. He faithfully served his country in the Vietnam war and lived his life as a proud patriot and veteran. Upon returning from Vietnam, John graduated from Portland State and wed Sandra Robertson, they soon returned to Corbett to raise their family, becoming valued members of the community. John built a successful career, working exclusively for Fred Meyer until his retirement in 2002.
Once retired, and with more time on his hands, John pursued his many passions, such as chopping firewood, mowing lawns, and engaging in an annual battle with the moles and skunks that seemed to genuinely enjoy tormenting him. His grandchildren provided John with joy, and he was a loving grandfather who took great pleasure in spending time with each one. This included watching their sporting events, passing along the fine art of operating his prized lawn mower and how to stack firewood to his grandson Cruz, and taking part in moments of silliness, such as allowing his granddaughters to paint his nails and pretend to pierce his ears. John always put the needs of his family before his own, living a frugal life so that he could provide for those that he loved. He cared deeply for his own parents, brother, and sisters, and was a model for those that were blessed to know him for what it looked like to put your family before oneself.
John was a pillar of strength and a loyal friend. Despite having a demanding job, he loved his annual hunting and fishing trips, and always made time to have a beer with a friend. To John, a successful trip did not not rely on coming home with a prized elk or fish, which is good, because if it had, he probably would have given up these pursuits long ago. Rather, what he valued most was the time he spent in nature, building memories with those he loved. John selflessly gave time to those around him and rarely asked for anything in return.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Fisher House at https://www.fisherhouse.org/
Services will be held at Corbett Community Church, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 29th.
