Born in Monticello, Illinois to Carroll and Orma Soper on March 24, 1937, Judith (Soper) Irwin passed away on October 29, 2021.
Judith, known as Judy, was the only child of Carroll and Orma Soper. Although born in Illinois, this little family would relocate to Washington state and finally to Portland, Oregon where they settled permanently. Judy graduated from Roosevelt High School in Portland. She also attended the business college in Portland where she was teasingly known as Portland’s own Elizabeth Taylor.
As a family, they would hunt for mushrooms and take regular trips to the beach where agates and sand dollars were the prime focus. On the weekends, as a young adult, Judy would go skiing with her friends on Mt. Hood and then head home and hit the ice rink at Lloyd Center, where she would meet her future husband, Jack. Jack would teach her how to dance skate and ultimately propose to her, THREE TIMES!
Married in August of 1962, they would start their over 50-year marriage. Hunting mushrooms was now an annual thing and agates became all gems and rocks! As a family with their first child, Debbie and second, Darren they would go rock hounding and mushroom hunting, fishing and camping nearly every month. Both Jack and Judy would foster long careers with US Bank, with Judy retiring as an Income Property supervisor. She talked about her little group of closers, at the bank, like they were second family.
Judy volunteered as a girl scout leader and occasionally a room mom for the kids’ grade school. She loved going to Darren’s football and baseball games. She was a proud mom. She created the most amazing Halloween costumes for her children and her grandson.
After Debbie and Darren married and moved away, Jack and Judy would travel to Hawaii, Cabo, Bahamas and Key West with New York, Alaska and Vegas in the mix. They retired in Anacortes, WA and ultimately built their dream home in Bay City. For the last 20 years, Bay City was their home. Spending time with her grandchildren Anthony, Natalee and Samantha and later her great granddaughter, Cheyenne, was a highlight for Judy.
Judy is survived by both of her children, Deborah Hughes and DarrenIrwin and his wife Rhonda, as well as three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Celebration of life will be held at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, November 10th, 2021 at 1pm. Refreshments will be served after.
