Julie was deeply loved and valued by her family, friends, dog, and community. She was born to Shirley and James Hood and grew up in Gresham, Oregon, with her older sister Jan Walker. She had a childhood filled with pool parties and BBQs at her parents, boating days on the Columbia, and fun holidays spent with all her extended family and family friends. Julie attended Gresham High School, where she was remembered as quite the social butterfly for being active in extracurricular activities, such as student council, cheer, and yearbook. She was voted Homecoming Queen and Girl Of The Year by her classmates. She was also an avid roller skater growing up and competed in competitions at Gresham Skate World. She loved to make flower arrangements, garden, was an elite scrapbooker, active skier, and cheer coach throughout her 20’s and after, and always managed a busy social life. After graduating from high school, Julie attended beauty school at Executive Institute of Hair Design where she pursued her lifelong career. She then went to apprentice at Magnum Opus Inc. in Portland, Oregon, and soon decided to start her Independent Contractor journey. Julie was an incredibly talented hairstylist and highly admired and valued by her long-time clientele.
Julie met her husband Barry in their early 20s through mutual friends. They got married in October 1995 in Lake Tahoe, shortly before Julie gave birth to their first daughter, Bailey Ann, in 1996. Julie continued to work as a Hairstylist at Salon Ambiance in downtown Gresham. They welcomed their second daughter, Karley Rose, in 1997, and then gifted their growing family with two more children a decade later, welcoming their third daughter, Riley Mae in 2005, and then finally welcoming her first son, Brady James, in 2007. All her kids' gender was a surprise at the hospital because Julie lived for moments like that. She would tell her children that “there are not many surprises you get to choose in life.” After she had her son, she dedicated her life to being a stay-at-home mom and wife.
Julie was a sociable and caring person who maintained lifelong friendships with childhood friends, neighbors, cheer teammates, classmates, and former colleagues. She also built strong bonds with her daughter's sports community, which felt like an extended family to her. Julie loved spending time with her family and enjoyed camping trips, beach vacations, watching football games, attending sporting events, hosting and going to parties, and lunch dates with her sister. She also liked engaging in outdoor adventures with her husband and children, such as hunting in Ukiah and camping at Oxbow.
Julie and Barry made a conscious effort to have all four of their children attend the same elementary, middle, and high schools, allowing them to share teachers and other school events. Julie was a familiar face to all faculty and staff, and she never missed any of her children's events, conferences, or games. She was a steadfast caretaker for her family and friends, always available to help in any situation. She took pride in her dedication to caring for others and never let them down. From taking care of her dad in his final few months of life, being actively involved in everything with her kids, as well as helping her husband prepare for their seasonal Christmas Tree Lot, and early morning preparation for the fishing boat while packing lunches for staff and guests for early morning outings— she never cut any corners or missed a beat when it came to taking care of her loved ones.
Julie had a magnetic personality that drew people to her. Regardless of their age or background. She was a beacon of light and love, and everyone who knew her could trust and count on her. She had a gift for connecting with people and making them feel special. Julie showed everyone what it meant to be loved unconditionally, and taught us the true meaning of love and loss. Her passing left a hole in the hearts of those dear to her.
She will surely be missed but never forgotten.
Her service will be held at Grace Community Church in Gresham @ 2pm January 6th with a reception to follow.
