Surrounded by his loving wife, Ana Cristina, and dear friends, he passed away quietly at hospice, after a long battle with service-related cancer.
Leonard was born to Swedish immigrant, Sven Angermund, and New York native Helen Bachorz Angermund, on February 6, 1945, in Hoosick Falls, NY. At the age of 3, Leonard moved with his family to Oregon. Shortly after, his little brother, George, was born, and they grew up together in the Portland area.
As a young boy Leonard attended Portland schools, played a little baseball and met his life-long friend and hunting buddy, Jack. They attended Madison High School together, Class of 1963. Leonard left school early though in ‘63 to follow the Call of Duty, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps and shipping off to Camp Pendleton for intense training. Following, he was sent to serve a tour in Vietnam. He served honorably, alongside his friend Bill, receiving several commendations, an expert rifle badge and earning the rank of Sergeant.
Len returned to Portland in late 1966, ready to finish up school and get on with life! He was briefly married in the late 60’s. Then he met and married his second wife, Barbara, in 1973 and they were together into the early 80’s. In 1999, he married his wife Joann, and they shared their Vancouver home, until her passing in 2011. Then in 2012, he journeyed to Brazil to meet his future beloved, Ana Cristina. He would return to visit many times. She cared for him like none other, and he truly thrived as she opened his heart and mind, introducing him to God and healthful living, forging an unbreakable soul bond and an eternal unconditional love. When Ana Cristina finally came to the U.S. in 2019, they officially celebrated their union with a small wedding, and went on to share many wonderful adventures in the following years. His smile in their pics tells it all!
Also in the late ‘60’s, Leonard began working for AT&T. He gave them 32 years of dedicated service, retiring as an Operations Manager. He also worked for Alcatel-Lucent and drove long-haul truck for Marten’s for many years before he retired for good.
Leonard worked hard, but he also loved to play! A life-long avid photographer and outdoorsman, he loved to capture special moments and places, to cross-country ski, scuba dive, and hike and climb mountains. Summiting Mt Hood 7 times was proud life accomplishment! He was an expert marksman and big game hunter, who never missed his annual hunts with friends or any opportunity to go hit the range! He mentored several very special young men in life, through sharing his wisdom and love of marksmanship, hunting and nature with them.
Leonard loved to read, was sharp and quick-witted. He had a warm laugh and genuine smile, a unique voice, an epic sense of humor and a heart of gold! He made friends wherever he went. He was kind and generous, laid back and calm, a gentle spirit and a rock to many…A True Friend.
Although Leonard would have been an amazing Dad, he never had biological children. But somehow, he inherited many nieces, nephews, mentees and young friends along the way. He was always there, present –showing up for many of our milestones, games, graduations, weddings, births and holidays-always offering life lessons and sharing love and positive energy through amazing stories, funny jokes, shared hobbies and unconditional kindness.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Sven & Helen, and his little brother, George, his third wife Joann, his cousin Lars and many other dear life friends. He is survived by his beloved beautiful wife, Ana Cristina and her son Conrado, his dear life-long friend Jack, and dear friends Marc, Shon, Herman, Jimmy, Bill, Viki, Kathleen & April, many cousins, and many nieces and nephews including- Jessika and her littles and all of Jack’s kids and grandkids, adored neighbor friends Erin & Chad, Jack & Jolve, Dorian & Aren, special friends & mentees, Alex & Jacob, and so many more treasured friends and family. Leonard changed all of our lives for the better and he will be deeply missed and always remembered.
