In Loving Memory of Lois Acheson

May 13, 1933 – October 24, 2025

Lois Acheson was born on May 13, 1933, to her parents, Mackall and Jane Correne Acheson, in Alexandria, Virginia.

Lois was a woman who made things happen. Raised in modest circumstances during the 1930s and 1940s, she learned resilience and determination early in life. At the age of 25, newly divorced and raising five young children, Lois faced tremendous challenges—but she met them head-on. With the help of her church community, she moved her family into a safe, subsidized housing project and took a temporary filing job with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

It was there that a simple bulletin board notice changed the course of her life. Employees were invited to test for a new training program in a then-unknown field—computers. Lois took the test, was selected, and quickly excelled in what would become her lifelong profession. She went on to build a remarkable career as a software engineer specializing in IBM System/32 and AS/400 technologies, pioneering in a field that was still in its infancy.

In the early 1960s, Lois relocated to California, remarried, and welcomed two more children into her growing family. Her professional life flourished across the financial, nonprofit, manufacturing, and transportation industries. Even into her later years, her dedication and expertise remained unmatched—she celebrated her 80th birthday while on contract, and only then did she finally retire.

Lois eventually settled in the Pacific Northwest, where she enjoyed the closeness of her family and continued growth of her career. Beyond her professional achievements, Lois’s greatest joy was found in her family, friends, and the many creative pursuits she loved. She was an avid seamstress, crafter, gardener, and writer—always finding new ways to express her creativity and care for others.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and dear friend—a woman of courage, resourcefulness, and heart who inspired all who knew her.

Please feel welcome to share your sincere condolences, warm memories, and cherished photos on this page for Lois’s family, friends, and loved ones.
