Margaret Elizabeth Murphy, age 90, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington. Born on September 7, 1934, in Yakima, Washington, Margaret lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to her family and a generous spirit.
Margaret was the firstborn of 10 children and graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1951. She completed a bookkeeping course that would shape the direction of her professional life. Early in her career, she worked as a waitress but eventually found her calling as a bookkeeper—a role she held for most of her working years with diligence and pride.
Family was at the heart of everything Margaret did. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Larry Murphy; her son John Murphy; her sister Frances; and brothers Ben and Gary. She is survived by her son Michael (Julie) Murphy; daughter Denise (John) Fischer; daughter-in-law Tammy Murphy; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Margaret’s home was always filled with unique collections of dolls, Kewpies, Waterford crystal, Hummel figurines and decorative plates from her travels. She loved yard-saling and finding more treasures. She also loved filling her house with music.
She had a passion for quilting and fashioned quilts for all her children and grandchildren, even great-grandchildren—every stitch a testament to her care and devotion to family. Her hands were rarely idle; she enjoyed embroidery, puzzles, and card games that brought fun and laughter to those around her. Her hanging fuchsia baskets were tended with affection and flourished under her attentive care.
One cherished memory held by her children is Margaret’s determination to make their dream of visiting Disneyland come true. With characteristic tenacity, she led them in picking berries to earn the money needed for the trip—a reflection of both her resourcefulness and unwavering commitment to creating joyful experiences for those she loved.
A memorial service celebrating Margaret’s life will be held on July 12, 2025, at 02:00 PM at Vancouver Church, 3300 NE 78th St, Vancouver, Washington. May Margaret Elizabeth Murphy’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
