Bernie was born on July 24, 1956 in Portland, Oregon to James and Helen (Ciz) McChrystal. She graduated from Centennial High School in 1974. Bernie took classes at Mt. Hood Community College and transferred to Portland State University, graduating in the early 1980s. She worked for Nuway Printing Company for many years as a graphic designer and later worked freelance.
Bernie loved to travel. She spent a lot of time in Korea as well as Seattle. She went on two trips to Hawaii and traveled throughout England and Ireland. She also enjoyed scuba diving and sky diving. Bernie was incredibly creative and had a good eye for anything visual or artistic. In addition to her graphic design work, Bernie made cards for family and friends. Her cards were usually created from multiple mediums including dried leaves or butterfly wings she found. She had a knack for finding the perfect verse or quote to add to her cards in beautiful handwriting. Friends and neighbors appreciated her friendly demeanor – Bernie always had a smile and kind words.
