Michelle Antoinette Rose (Sanzone), beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and niece passed peacefully and courageously into the Kingdom of God, January 9th, 2018. She was in the comfort of her home, surrounded by loved ones and beautiful music. She was 63 years old.
The first of 7 children, Michelle was born November 3rd, 1954 at St. Bernardine’s Catholic Hospital in San Bernardino, Calif. She attended St. Catherine’s grade school and Eisenhower High School and was an extremely well-rounded student, maintaining excellent academics while playing volleyball and basketball, cheering for the varsity cheerleading team, playing the guitar, singing in the school choir, and singing with her sister Nan as a duet ensemble. She often recalled fond memories of childhood including the wild antics she and her siblings would get into as well as living near 4 of her grandparents. She would reminisce about the Italian feasts at Grandma & Grandpa Sanzone’s and Midwest comfort food at Grandma and Grandpa Tournier’s house. It was through both grandmothers that her passion for cooking was ignited.
While living in Carlsbad, CA in 1977 Michelle met Larry Rose and they were married in September of 1978 in Eugene, Ore. They raised their 2 children, David and Lori, in Oregon and also spent 15 years in San Diego Calif. before finally moving back to Oregon in 2005.
Michelle was a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating a number of top-rated restaurants in Sandy, Welches and Gresham Ore. Her latest venture was the popular old-fashioned pie shop Pie vs Pie in downtown Gresham. Michelle’s talents were many, but she was extremely accomplished at all things creative; she was artistic and could sing beautifully, but she was most famous for being a fantastic chef and baker, often taking the time to mentor and teach others her techniques.
In April of 2017 Michelle was diagnosed with stage 4 metaplastic breast cancer. She bravely underwent multiple treatments and entered into home hospice in November of 2017.
Michelle was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Rose. She is survived by son David (Page), daughter Lori, sisters Nan, Jenny and Patti, brothers Mike and Matt, parents Michael and Shirley, grandchildren Aurora, Parker, Natalia, Chase, Aidric, Calista and Emerson.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday 1/16/18 at 11am followed immediately by a Hawaiian Aloha reception at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Gresham Oregon. Additional services include an open casket viewing this Friday 1/12/18 at 5pm, and Rosary Prayer next Monday 1/15/18 at 7pm. Both events will take place at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Oregon.
Memorials and donations can be made to St. Henry’s Capital Campaign (Gresham, Ore.), and The Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist.
Michelle’s family wishes to extend our warm and sincere thanks to the many caregivers who cared for Michelle throughout these past months.
