On March 12, 1936, Nona Blanche (Schneringer) Layton was born in Crawford, Nebraska. She passed away September 3, 2022, in Portland, Oregon. The oldest of four children born to Raymond and Blanche Schneringer, Nona grew up in Crawford with her siblings and numerous cousins. The family moved to Sheridan, Wyoming; then to Tacoma, Washington, for a very brief period; ultimately visiting friends in Corbett, Oregon, which became home in 1951.
Nona graduated from (Columbian) Corbett High School in 1953 and entered the Providence Hospital School of Nursing that same year. She married Jim Layton on December 1, 1955. After living briefly in Fairview and Springdale, the couple moved their growing family from an apartment at the former Corbett garage/gas station site to the house on Larch Mountain Road, where they resided for 60 years and raised their children, Debra Granberg, Tom Layton, Pam Caddy, Rick (Monica) Layton, and Julie Dearden.
Serving the Corbett community, Nona was a Girl Scout leader for several years. She was a member of Multnomah County’s Corbett election board for 28 years, last serving as supervisor in November 1992. Nona supported the Crown Point Country Historical Society for several years and earned the Bea Graff Community Service Award in 2014. To honor her mother’s ambition of becoming a school teacher, Nona provided a scholarship through the Corbett Education Foundation, which is still awarded today.
In August 1971, Nona graduated from the Mt. Hood Community College Operating Room Technology program. She worked at Providence Medical Center for 23 years, retiring in 1994.
Joining the Rebekah’s Boring Lodge #213 in 1987, Nona held many positions in the organization, rising to Grand Matriarch of Oregon in the early 2000s.
Nona’s interest in history developed into a passion of studying family genealogy. She spent countless hours researching and accumulating photos and documents from throughout the states to put together treasured and detailed notebooks for all members of her large extended family. Nona broadened her hobby to include archiving data on the Corbett and Troutdale areas.
Nona is survived by her five children; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters Dona Layton and Kay (Joe) Vetaly; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 2:00 pm, at the Corbett Community Church, 34309 NE Mershon Road, Corbett, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be considered for either the Corbett Education Foundation, Schneringer Family Memorial Scholarship, 35800 E.
