

Richard (Dick) Waynne Burgess was born on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1932 in Devils Lake, North Dakota. His parents were the late James Sheffield Sr. and Stella (Carlson) Burgess. Dick grew up on the family farm in Devils Lake, North Dakota and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1949. He joined the Navy in 1952-1955, serving on the USS Stickleback (submarine) as a Radio Mechanic.
After his service in the Navy, Dick attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While attending UND, he met and married his sweetheart Marion Jane (Hauf) on June 16, 1957, and they were blessed with 4 children. Together, Dick and Marion made their home in Grand Forks and Fargo, North Dakota until 1969, when they moved to Gresham, Oregon. They lived in and around the Portland area until his retirement as partner from PAE Engineering Firm in 1994. As a partner at PAE, he was involved with the Portland Front Street Lighting Project, Portland City Parks, Portland area hospitals, Tri-Met Light Rail stations, KOIN Center, One Pacific Square Portland, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and many, many, many home projects.
Dick was very active in the Submarine Veterans; OMSI; as a Scout Master; the Elks Club Gresham; a driver for Loaves and Fishes; and his church, Gethsemane Lutheran Portland; and his children's and grandchildren's activities. Dick turned 84 years old on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marion; his children: Volola (Michael); Richard (Annette); Charlene (Daniel); Michael; his grandchildren Brittany (Matthew), Kannon, Christopher (Alyson), Gregory (Kalie), Jonathon (Olivia), Keith (Alyssa), Preston, Nathaniel, and Kinsey; 3 great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He will be dearly missed by all.
