Beloved husband, dad, brother and grandfather
Richard Lee Teeny, July 3, 1946 – Nov 4, 2019
Richard (Dick) Teeny, 73, passed away from a Cardiac incident while elk hunting in the Snake River canyon with dear friends, exactly the way he wanted to go. His parents were William Teeny and Margaret Hassel. He grew up in North Portland working with his brother Gary in the family business, a post WWII “Teeny’s Department Store” on Lombard Street.
Growing up, Dick’s favorite place to sleep and inhale the scent of prairie sage, was at the cabin as part of the Upland Bird Club, located outside of Maupin, Or, near the Deschutes River. Three generations of the Teeny Family enjoyed endless days of fellowship, fishing and hunting together. Dick even took his sons’ baseball teams there to experience the great outdoors.
Dick was a Roosevelt Rough Rider and he kept in touch with his pals from that time. He married Carol Kirk and had two sons, Jeffrey & Chad. Chad’s son Jacob is also an RHS graduate. Dick stayed active in the RHS alumni activities. Dick was an iron worker, working out of local 29 when he was not hunting, diving or fishing. Dick and Gary started a steel erection business, “Industrial Steel Erectors”, and he did this up to retirement.
When Dick married Lanea Akers in 1989, they lived in N Portland and Lanea taught at Roosevelt High School for 5 years. They then moved to East County Gresham and travelled to many places, often related to Lanea’s family in the Midwest. They were married for 30 precious years.
Dick came from a very close, large, loving Lebanese family - Grape leaves, Tabbouleh and Pocket Bread, yum, yum!
Dick became a committed Christian in his middle age years and always had such a grateful spirit. Many times Dick gratefully acknowledged, “Everything I have was given to me by God”. Dick and Lanea supported and Dick participated in several out of country missions. A trip to Lebanon and several trips to Haiti, sometimes with family, were life changing for him. His latest adventure involved sending books to orphanages in Haiti.
Dick had a great sense of humor and always had a smile and a twinkle in his bright blue eyes. One of Dick’s favorite lines was, “Everybody’s weird once you get to know them!”
Dick was preceded in death by his father William and his mother Margaret. He is survived by his wife Lanea, his sons Jeffrey & Chad, his grandson Jacob, his brother Gary, sisters Sandra and Sonia as well as a few aunts, one uncle, cousins, nieces and a nephew. His last favorite German Shorthair Barney is missing him.
