OBITUARY

Mr. Robert Bob Emerson Gates Jr.

December 18, 1943October 30, 2011

Robert Emerson Gates Jr., a resident of Sandy, Oregon, died on October 30, 2011 in Portland. He was 67 years of age.

Robert (Bob) was born on December 18, 1943 in Pasadena, California and was the son of Robert and Jeanne (Bosca) Gates. As a child, Bob lived a military life residing on various Army Bases throughout the world. His family settled at Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, Washington where he graduated from high school.

Bob started his military career by attending West Point Military Academy. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1965 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Bob was deployed to serve in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery. He retired from the Army on December 9, 1969 at the rank of Captain and later went to work for Shell Oil Company in California where he worked in retail engineering, sales management, and special projects.

On July 21, 1978, Bob married Susan Hayes on Curacao, an island in the Caribbean. They met in Houston, Texas and she joined him there where he lived at the time for his job. That pattern continued and the couple moved often with Shell, living in Detroit, Chicago, and other cities, before finally settling in 1994 at Shell head office back in Houston. Bob retired in 1998 and the couple moved to Sandy, Oregon in 2005. They both loved the beauty of Oregon and the many wonderful friends they made. Bob was a devoted husband. He enjoyed building computers, wood working, ham radio and Sudoku. He also had a special place in his heart for the couple's cats and the many birds he fed extravagantly.

Bob is survived by his wife, Susan, of Sandy, father, Robert Gates, Sr. of Tacoma, Washington, brother, Cass Gates and niece, Michelle Christenson, of Washington.

Dear Susan,
I thoroughly enjoyed the video of Bob's life. What a beautiful mother. What a beautiful man he grew into. And then, beautiful you came into his life. These accidents that take such a good person from our lives are hard to understand.
I was always impressed with Bob's devotion to you - always dropping you off and picking you up..or dropping several of us off and picking us all up, regardless of the time or circumstances. He will be deeply missed.
Please know you are surrounded with all of our prayers and love during this very difficult time.
Much Love, Many Blessings,
Carol Moyle

Susan, I recall that the very first time you and I met, and many times after, you mentioned Bob. I never met him but I feel like I knew him. I know he meant a great deal to you. Please accept my deepest condolences.

We didn't know Bob as well as we should have, but he was a true gentleman and a very likable guy. The world is poorer for his absence.

Our thoughts are with you Susan.

Susan, the USMA Class of 1965 has lost yet another stalwart. But you have lost even more. As Bob's Classmate, I cannot tell you how much Bob's passing saddens me. You should understand that even though he may have been out of touch with many of his Classmates for so many years, Bob was, and always will be, an integral part of our Class. And we shall miss him deeply!

I am heartened that Carole Smith has reached out to you. In that same spirit, understand that the Class of 1965 stands ready to support you. Please let us open up a line of contact either through the two Classmates with whom Bob maintained regular contact or through the Class network.

As Class Historian, I send my condolences.
