Ronald James Norwood, 77, passed away peacefully on August 21st, 2024 in Happy Valley, Oregon after a long and brave battle with Lewy Body Dementia.
Born July 7th 1947 in Tacoma Washington to James and Joyce Norwood, née Sugg, Ronald spent his early years in Tacoma and later moved to Eugene Oregon where he spent his school years and graduated from North Eugene High School in 1965. Immediately following graduation, Ronald enlisted in the United States Navy and was proud to serve his country during the Vietnam War on the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2), the first amphibious assault ship to be designed and built from the keel up as a dedicated helicopter carrier.
After finishing his tour of duty, Ronald began a long and exciting career in radio as a program director and station manager at KORE, KUGN, and KEED in Eugene and KMPS in Seattle. He received awards from Columbia Records, Casino Records, and MCA Records commemorating the sale of more than one million units, and he counted meeting Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, and many other country stars at concerts that he organized and emceed as some of his most cherished memories. Later in life, he lit up the airwaves at KBZY in Salem, OR and on his long-running online radio show, “The Doo-Wop Express,” which had thousands of listeners each month from around the globe.
He will also be remembered as a beloved manager at the Ron Wilson Center – a non-profit agency providing services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A lifelong bookworm, he routinely read at least 50 books a year and shared his love of reading with his children and family. His favorite place on earth was anywhere along the Oregon Coast which he frequented on countless weekends over the years.
Ronald was a man of integrity, kindness, and generosity, and he left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He was a proud, loving, and devoted father to his three children – Jeffery, Alexis, and Jamie, and took great delight in their unique personalities. He loved every member of his family deeply and was steadfastly supportive of them all.
Ronald is survived by his three children, his daughter in law Julia, his granddaughters, Willa and Margot, his sister Wendy Howell, brother-in-law Barry Howell, sister Sandra O’Neil, a brother Michael E. Norwood, his stepmother, Betty J. Ellis, his former wife Lee Cross, former wife Candace Robbecke, and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Sugg Norwood, his father, James R. Norwood, his sister Julie Anne Laughlin, and by his former wife Patricia Norwood.
Per his wishes, Ronald will be interred at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
