

Virginia “Gigi” Swanson died on August 14, 2012 in Gresham, Oregon at the age of 89. She was born on June 24, 1923 to German immigrants. She had one younger brother and one older sister. Her mother died when she was twelve. She had to become a parent to her younger brother, Bob. Gigi excelled at dance and gymnastics while in school. Unfortunately she had to quit at age fourteen to go to work.
Gigi met and married John Swanson in 1943. John was a traveling salesman for Kandel Knitting Mills. When he was 26 he contracted Tuberculosis. Gigi worked and cared for him during his long recovery. They had one daughter Christie in 1950, and continued to live and work in Portland. John passed away in 1993.
Gigi worked at several jobs during her adult life. Sales, dance instructor, waitress, caregiver and later art teacher were some of her occupations. While working at Sears, she was honored to ride on their Rose Festival Float. Later while working as a waitress she completed her GED and then continued on to earn her Associate of Arts Degree. In 1969, Gigi founded the Portland Fine Arts Guild. The guild has now grown to over 1000 members and continues to encourage future artists. Many evenings, Gigi could be found painting in her kitchen until late into the night. She encouraged many friends to take art classes with her enthusiasm. Gigi had a lifelong passion for travel. She volunteered and created a travel club for seniors. Her favorite trips included a month in China and three visits to Greece. She also took several cruises to various countries. Her daughter Chris traveled with her several times. The China Sea, the Amazon River and the Caribbean were some of their destinations together. Even her granddaughter Carolyn accompanied her to the Mexican Riviera.
Gigi lived next door to her daughter for 30 years. She always enjoyed family gatherings and game nights. She especially enjoyed playing cards.
Gigi is survived by her daughter Christie and her husband Larry Clow, of Portland, OR. brother, Danny, of St. Helens, OR., sister, Starlene, of Astoria, OR. two grandchildren, Jacob and his wife Shiela Clow and Carolyn Clow, and three great-grandchildren, Thalia Clow and Joshua and Silas Struthers.
The family wishes to thank eveyrone at Pacific Gardens Alzheimer’s and Dementia unit where Gigi resided for the last two years. Their care and concern for her well being were a huge contribution to her quality of life.
