Bill served his country in the U.S. Army from January 1953, until December 1954. A week after he joined, Bill married his wife Donna on January 6th, 1953. They were married for 58 wonderful years. In that time, they had five children together. Bill spent most of his energy finding ways to take care of his family. He enjoyed clam digging with his family, going all the way into the surf to get the biggest ones for them. In his later years, Bill’s main hobby was to save them money, so he clipped coupons every chance he had.
He was an iron worker, and worked on many of the bridges and dams around the Portland area, including the John Day dam and Freemont Bridge, as well as St. Vincent’s and Good Samaritan Hospitals. Bill was known as the”tomato man” to his neighbors. He would plant and harvest more than 20 plants, carefully setting aside each batch for the intended recipient. He preferred his tomatoes with sugar.
Bill is survived and missed by his wife, Donna Luebbers; son, Ron Luebbers of Boring; daughters Josephine Myron of Portland, Debbie Dalby of Salem, Bonnie Sue Seela of Vancouver, and Linda Gutierrez of Salem, 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held for Bill at 12:00PM on Monday August 01, 2011 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, with graveside service, including full military honors, at Willamette National Cemetery after the funeral. For more information please go to www.batemancarrollfunerals.com
