

Mrs. Callahan was born on March 6, 1920 in Gay, GA, daughter of the late Annie Funderburke Caldwell and Ralph Newton Caldwell. She received her teaching degree at Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro, GA and was a revered teacher of young children for her entire life. She was also a beloved mother of two sons and two daughters. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Griffin where she taught children’s Sunday School, sang in the Sanctuary and Saints Alive choirs, participated in Women’s Missions and in the XYZ Ministry, and was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class. Throughout her life, she was a mentor to many younger women and was an inspiration to everyone she met. She had a deep love for the Lord and lived her life as a witness to others.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, William Lewis Callahan, Sr. and her oldest son, William Lewis Callahan, Jr. Surviving relatives include: son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Susan Callahan of Rex, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Mitch Gilmer of Griffin, GA; daughter, Mary Ellen Mount of Griffin, GA; and daughter-in-law, Carol Callahan of Meansville, GA; grandchildren, Wendy and Kyle Willoughby of Senoia, GA; Corey and Christian Callahan of Zebulon, GA; Julia Callahan of Decatur, GA; Catherine and Dustin Wright of Griffin, GA; and A1C Christine Callahan of Beale AFB, CA; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Fisher, and Anslee Callahan, Anna and Jake Willoughby, and Eli Wright, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Griffin, GA on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. Friends may visit with the family following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brightmoor Hospice, Inc., 3223 Newnan Road, Griffin, GA 30223 or to “The Dream Fund” at First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 908, Griffin, GA 30224 in memory of Dorothy Callahan.
