Dr. Enrique Montero was a native of Ecuador. He was born January 12, 1918. He had his education in Quito, the capital of that country. He graduated from Medical School on July 1944 and received a scholarship from the Rockefeller Medical Institute serving an internship and residency at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.
After a short stay in Ecuador he took a fellowship in Respiratory Diseases at Battey State Hospital. In September 1951 he became the first foreign graduate to obtain a license to practice medicine in the State of Georgia. And in January 1952 he started a residency in the then naissant specialty of Anesthesiology. Upon conclusion of which, he came to Griffin the last week of December 1953. He practiced anesthesiology until July 1967. He practiced pulmonology exclusively thereafter. In addition to pulmonology he introduced bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy, esophagology, and critical care medicine. He was a Fellow Emeritus of the American College of Chest Physician and of the American Thoracic Society. He developed and managed a laboratory for respiratory function at rest and on exercise. He retired on October of 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen G. Montero; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Leslie Montero; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne M. and Mark Severino; grandchildren, Rebecca Montero, Courtney and Mike Vito, Kristen Severino and Todd Smith, Mark C. and Jennifer Severino, and Bryan Severino, great-grandchild, Brady Smith.
A visitation with the family and a time to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Montero will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 10AM until 12 Noon at Haisten McCullough Funeral Home.
