

She was the widow of William Glenn Bryant, former Mayor and City Commissioner of Griffin. She was the daughter of the late Milner and Carolyn Seargeant of Etowah, Tennessee. Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky in 1912, and raised in Etowah, Tennessee, she attended Milligan College and the University of Tennessee. After moving to Griffin with her husband in 1941, she became very active in church, civic and charitable associations. She was a long time member of the Griffin First United Methodist Church where she was a Circle Leader, Sunday School teacher, member of the Parsonage Committee, and served as a “Pink Lady” for the Griffin/Spalding County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Griffin Utility Club, Elks Club Auxiliary, Atlanta Art Club, Atlanta Watercolor Society, and the Griffin Spalding County Art Association, which honored her with an Art Scholarship in her name to be awarded to a local high school graduate each year. She taught elementary art at Pine Mountain Children’s Home for many years, and was well known for starting a “Creative Play School” for ages 3 and 4 years old to introduce them to Art and other creative projects. Mrs. Bryant served on the Board of Directors of the Regional Girl Scouts of America, and was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.
She is survived by one son, Jon Michael Bryant, Sr. and daughter-in-law, Nancy Brooks Bryant, of Daufuskie Island, SC, three grandchildren, Jon Michael Bryant Jr., of Birmingham, AL, Helen Bryant Hyde of Indianapolis, IN, and Virginia Bryant Meguschar, of Indianapolis, IN, five great-grandchildren, and her close friend and caregiver of many years, Shirley Smith.
Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Seargeant Bryant will be held Monday, February 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Rev. Hubert Flanagan will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Oak Hill Mausoleum. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Griffin First United Methodist Church, 1401 Maple Dr., Griffin, GA 30224 in memory of Mrs. Bryant.
Haisten McCullough Funeral Home, 1155 Everee Inn Rd. is in charge of arrangements.
