

Herbert Newton Milton McCarthney Jr, age 81 of Griffin, passed away following a lengthy illness at Upson Regional Medical Center, on September 28, 2017. He was born on May 17th 1936 in New York City , NY, the son of the late Herbert N. M. McCarthney Sr and the late Mildred Sawyer McCarthney. He is also preceeded in death by his brother Thomas McCarthney and sister-in-laws Joyce Bevil Stein and Linda Ford Bevil.
He is survived by his wife Frances Bevil McCarthney; children and spouces, Herbert N. M. McCarthney III (Catherine), Rickcliff D. McCarthney (Jill), Jennifer Kuhle (Bob), Milton McCarthney (Staci), and Trevor McCarthney (Kristina); grandchildren, Melissa (Bob), Jimmy (Heather), Robert, Thomas, Aaron, Wesley, Forrest, Ryan (Shannon), Trevor (Jessie), Lindsay, Mallory, Matisyn, Kayla, and Haylee; great grandsons Colton and Lucas; brother-in-laws Jamie (Buddy) Bevil and Bill Stein, sister-in-law Kathy Cheek McCarthney, and several nieces and nephews.
Herb was a 1955 graduate of Rahway High School in Rahway, New Jersey. He then pursued his life-long dream to become a pilot, certified in instrument and milti-engine aircraft. He was chief pilot and CEO of Red Bank Air Taxi prior to working at Eastern Airlines, retiring with a rank of Captain. He then became the Cheif Pilot for Academy Airlines. He loved flying and was an excellent pilot, logging over 45,000+ hours of flight time.
Herb was a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Griffin, the Airplane Owners and Pilot Association, the Airline Pilots Association, and the Mid-Georgia and Georgia Cattlemens Association, and the Griffin Moose Lodge and Legion. He continued the renewal of his instructor certification for 60 years. He loved sports, coaching his sons in basketball, baseball, and football for many years; loved raising cattle on the family farm until his declining heath prohibited it, and loved playing trivia on Tuesdays at the Moose Lodge with his Silver Wings teammates.
The viewing will be at Haisten McCullough funeral home Saturday September 30th from 6-8pm and service Sunday October 1st at 4pm, with burial following at Milner Baptist Church, Reverends Glenn Hemrick and Keith Ford officiating.
