Al genuinely touched the lives of thousands of people. He was a shining example of Chrsit here on this earth. Our hearts weep but also rejoice, for he is in pain no more and in God's presence. I vividly recall the time Al & I prayed together at Grace in the Winter of 2003 that I would match at the Uni of Michigan orthodontic program. The peace I felt after that prayer passed all comprehension. I pray now the same peace our Heavenly Father provided that day will be with the Kuhnle Family and Friends.

Al was such a great man. He reflected Christ's love to generations of young people in the Detroit area. Al's smile, encouraging words, and passion for Jesus were magnetic and opened many hearts and minds to the message of Christ. He was someone you always wanted to be near and to be like. I have known Al since 1953 when I started singing in VCY, he was truly a spiritual mentor to me. He was the master of Ceremonies at our wedding. His life so radiated JESUS, you will be so missed. Anne & Family, I never spent a lot of one on one time with Al, just brief conversations in the hallways at Grace. But he always had a smile and a word of encouragement for me and Heather. He had that "something" that we all wanted. That "something" had to be the richness of knowing Jesus and the deep faith that Al walked out. I'm thankful to have known Al and feel blessed that the Grace Family benefited from his willingness to serve as interim pastor during a difficult time. Dear Anne and Family: Al is now face to face with Jesus Christ. It doesn't get any better than that.

Anne- I remember the story of Al's doctor telling him to not take over the interim pastorship at Grace. According to Al the doctor said, "Al, if you do this your heart won't be able to take it. It will kill you." And Al told the doctor, "even if it's the last thing I do I know that I am following the call of God." I'll NEVER forget that story. Not as long as I live. Your husband was such a brave and faithful follower of God. He was the BEST example of a believer who kept his "eye on the prize" and never faltered in his service and devotion to Jesus, even in the darkest of times. He will be held up for generations as a man who truly walked with the Lord. I am amazed, encouraged and inspired by him. My husband and I had moved back to Detroit in hopes of healing ourselves and our marriage. We knew we needed to be at Grace to have support and encouragement. It was a year later that Ryan heard a message that Al gave and accepted Christ into his heart. The healing soon began. We are forever grateful for God using Al to bless us each Sunday-we really love him and forever will hold a very special place in our hearts for him.

Anne & Family Like you we already miss Al. We know that he is in a much better place - HOME!! I will always remember seeing him on Sundays give him a hug, ask how he's doing and with a smile he would tell me. He never did try to sugar coat it. Words alone cannot express how much I loved and admired Al. He was my example of what being connected to the vine (Jesus Christ) really looks like - loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled. I will really miss his encouragement and hugs on Sunday mornings when my life seems most chaotic. We arenâ€™t the same because of him, we wonâ€™t be the same without him. Through it all, God is faithful and we thank Him for the gift of time with Al. This is a song I heard years ago and itâ€™s always meant a lot to me - prayerfully it will touch you as well. Anne and Family, We were all blessed by Al's presence at Grace. Thank you for sharing him with us. To comfort you when you think of Al being gone, read John 11. Jesus wept. Why? He knew that Lazarus was in paradise, that wonderful home. I believe He wept because He knew how difficult it would be for Lazarus to come back from paradise. Let us dry our tears and rejoice that Al is safely with Him in paradise. We'll be praying for you all.

Dear Anne, We came to Grace just after the split in 2001. Al was our Pastor. As you know, he always told the assembly that he was not the head pastor of Grace. He would raise his arm and point his finger upward and proclaim that Jesus Christ was the head Pastor of this assembly. That is why John and I stayed at Grace. He shone brightly with the fruit of the Holy Spirit. I can't even imagine what he looks like now. He must be radiating with God's glory. We love him. We miss him. We will see him again. Al was the bridge for the church family during a very difficult period. His leadership during that time inspired us all to be steadfast and wait on the Lord. We are, and continue to be, a stronger church body from his selflessness. Even through his illness and now death his leadership remains. We'll miss you until we will see you again.

When I think of love I think of Al Kuhnle. It is an honor for me to know that I knew him and that I sat in the church where he preached at Sunday after Sunday. I am grateful to Al for what I learned from his teachings. Al will be missed by many, but he will always remain in our hearts.

I never actually got to speak with Al, but I've listened to him many times. I wish I could have told him this, but I want you to know that he inspired me. Al's faith in God...even during the toughest times...was unwavering. Even cancer couldn't take away the joy and hope in his heart because of his relationship with Jesus Christ. Pastor Al, you were the reason why I started coming to Grace Community church when the church was reading the book "Purpose driven Life book" by Rick Warren, my neighors invited me to a be a part of their small group to read the book every Friday evenings at the church. That didn't end there, every Sunday mornings, my neighbors would pull up their car into my drive way and bring me to Grace community Church eventhough I was attending another church at the time. Your preachings inspired me and I learnt alot from you. You are truly missed but I know that you are in a better place with the creator...Helen

"Jesus Christ is the Senior Pastor of this church!" "His altar is always open." "Called of God? Whoa! That's something!" "Give him back to us. We need him." "Hold the phone!" "You can't outgive God." "God wants us to give of our first fruits." "I am a follower of Jesus Christ." These and a thousand other things Al said to encourage and teach those of us who were blessed to be on the Way with him. But more than words spoken in great humor and deep spirit, Al spoke to us by his life and the way he lived it. If only I could be like Al. Dr. Al Kuhnle (truly a doctor, healer and learned man) was and remains in our hearts as mentor, pastor, father, brother, teacher, counselor, elder and friend. It was Al who blessed us as teens, his Lord using him to provide a "cool" way to live for Christ with other believers. Hundreds if not thousands of us dated and married, and now raise children and grandchildren to God's glory. When he found us at our lowest, he encouraged us to get up, find our Calling, and serve again. He married our children. Laid hands on our grandchildren. Cared and loved. Welcomed us into his home, and was an honored family member in ours. He prayed, every day, for those he loved, whom God placed on his heart. Many's the time we were on that list, and it made a huge difference. This, too, gave great heart, when facing hard circumstances. At risk of his own life and health, Al continued to answer the Call. When others shrank back, God used Al to save and preserve and put back on solid footing a ministry of a hundred years, by doing the impossible. "All things are possible. Only believe." Al reminded us. And when the prospect of cancer attacked, Al's response was much like that of his Lord. We saw him stricken and afflicted, but heard no word of complaint. Instead, he set his face with a smile. He didn't give up. He ministered to the end, and beyond. (Watch what God does this Friday!) And he loved. His church, his friends, his ministry, his wonderful wife and family, and most of all his Lord. In that perspective, let us remind ourselves, as Lincoln reminded us 145 Novembers ago: "It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work ... to the great task remaining before us." Let us take up Al's task with his great heart and spirit of unity and encouragement and love. Let us not grow weary in doing good, for Al never did (or, if he did, he never let on.) Let us proclaim the Gospel of God's grace, bind the wounded and reach out to heal the broken in Christ's name. Let us all live like Al. Imitate him, as he imitated Christ. I can close my eyes and still see us with Al on the Boblo boat, approaching the foot of Woodward, uncounted numbers of us singing in joyous chorus "How Great Thou Art." Wow, what memories of VCY/YFC in the 70's. The concert's, the youth rallys, the Bible quizzing. Fun times! Al played an integral part in my faith as a teenager. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Prov 22:6

To Al's Family, We are two of many who were touched by Al's kindness, powerful words and more powerful actions. As members of Grace Church we view Al as the savior of our church. Al sacrificially led our body as we dealt with a difficult financial and spiritual crisis. Al was the beacon of hope, optimism, and most of all faith. The Faith and trust in the Lord that he exhibited was one of the greatest examples of true leadership and sheparding I have ever seen. This leadership has impacted our involvement with the church in a profound way. As many of us go through leadership traning at Grace, I am constantly reminded of Al and the exemplary leadership skills he exhibited in saving this body from self destruction. Al was a "Servant Leader" in the truest sense of the word. He established a "vision" for our church and then led us down a path to realize that vision. I pray that I will one day be able to have the impact and leadership ability exhibited by Al. This world will have a void in his absence, but will be a much better place because of his life and the impact he had on so many. His legacy will live on through others and there is no greater testimony to a live well lived than the existence of such a legacy in the lives of those with whom we interact. God Bless You Al. Dear precious Anne & family, When I first heard of Al's death, I couldn't help but smile. I just couldn't help thinking of him sitting at the feet of Jesus...the One he loved and spoke about so often. I have many memories of Al (all good), but the one I will treasure is when you and he came up to me at my mother's funeral and Al whispered in my ear "we do not grieve like those who have no hope!" Amen to that!! Anne, I simply cannot say anything about Al that hasn't either been said or that you don't already know. Dear Anne, I lost my father 18 years ago when we was just 77. After developing a friendship with Al, I considered him to be like a father to me. I sought his wise council on many different issues always taking to heart what he said. I held his opinion to be above that of anyone else. I will greatly miss seeing him and receiving his warm embrace, but I will have all Eternity to ask him all of the questions that will have to go unanswered until then. We cannot even imagine life without our Dear Friend. We so wish we were in Detroit with you and the family this week. Dear Anne and Family, I am very sorry to hear about Al's passing. He was an inspiration to many people. My husband Gary passed away last year at age 54. He and I both loved to hear Al preach. Even thought Gary had been fighting cancer he was so sad to hear when Al was diagnosed. I know Gary was so happy to see Al, to get another big hug from him. Dear Anne, I wanted to tell you the unique way Al has had an affect on my life. When I was a teenager, I was affected by his involvement with Young Life. Later in life, I was affected by Al and your leadership at DRMM. Then, Al was at Grace Church when my family and I started attending. And finally, Al has been a mentor to Gary Detloff and Gary is my mentor. So as you can see Al has had a great influence on my life. He truly was a man of God, whose desire was to have a positive affect on those that he came in contact with. I will miss him. Please know that you are in my family and my prayers. When I try to understand why my heart aches so at the passing of this one man, I come to the realization that I grieve because there are so few things in this world that are genuine. In a foreign place, where what truly matters is so often discounted and marginalized, Al is an extraordinarily bright and powerful instrument of the life-giving truth every person deeply needs. Most people do not have the courage to love the way he did and, therefore, limit their capacity to reflect the healing power of Jesus Christ. This man threw caution to the wind â€“ and dared to love with wild abandon. For that reason, I will always be grateful for having known him.

I have heard it said that - when you are gone, people may not remember what you said, or even what you did...but they will always remember the way you made them feel. - Hereâ€™s to the man who somehow had the ability to make every person, young or old, rich or poor, feel like an incredibly treasured child of God. While, as a single mom, I often felt inept and alone, Al always NOTICED and made sure we knew that he truly cared. For all 4 of my children and me, over many years of ups and downs, that has made an impact beyond words. I canâ€™t possibly express how grateful I am to have had him in our lives. Dear Anne: I live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and am in Sanibel in the winter. I wanted to let you know that I was so sorry to hear of Al's passing.... sorry for family and friends here, but not for him. Al is at the feet of the Savior now. I can just imagine the smile on Jesus' face as He saw Al approach ~ His faithful and loving child come home. I remember when my mother died in November of 1994 and as Christmas approached, I was experiencing sadness that she wasn't here to enjoy Christmas with us. Then I thought.... I am celebrating the birth of the baby in the manger ~ but Mother is seeing the Savior face to face. She is definitely having the best Christmas of all! That thought ~ and the fact that I know I will see her again one day ~ cheered me and I felt the peace of God fill me. I then knew the real meaning of "grieving, but not like those who have no hope." I pray that God will comfort you and your family during this difficult time. May you be consoled by the legacy of all the people Al touched during his lifetime and for the tremendous impact he made for Christ. That's what it's all about ~ and he knew it. Dear Ann and family, How lovely and strongly encouraging is Al's smile and sweet words of "Hello" as I/we saw you both in church on Sunday's. What a joy you both are. Dear Anne, I know you and Al had many happy years together and I just want to express my sympathy and condolences in this time of your loss.

Al Kuhnle was first and foremost a pastor. I have worked with Al when he had other titles and job responsibilities but in whatever role, Alâ€™s heart was that of a pastor â€“ loving, caring, teaching, edifying. In the years at VCY/YFC/Young River I have seen Al manage, counsel, console, motivate, etc. but what stands out is Al was always a loving encourager. Al was someone who didn't leave expressions of love unsaid. He embraced God's lambs no matter how messy their lives might have seemed. In Philippians Paul says he has no one else like Timiothy, someone who has a genuine concern for the welfare of others. Al was our Timothy. He took a genuine interest in the people God entrusted to him. He lived well and he loved well. Our hearts wait in longing to see him again.

We remember so well the excitement of getting on the church bus that was heading to Masonic Temple. Al put the excitement in the air. He made loving Jesus fun. We have wonderful memories of the Boblo Boat Cruises. As we were thinking back to those times, a song came to memory that we used to love to sing as we cruised down the Detroit River: Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace; In the mansions bright and blessed Heâ€™ll prepare for us a place. While we walk the pilgrim pathway, Clouds will overspread the sky; But when travâ€™ling days are over, Not a shadow, not a sigh. Let us then be true and faithful, Trusting, serving every day; Just one glimpse of Him in glory Will the toils of life repay. Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty weâ€™ll behold; Soon the pearly gates will open; We shall tread the streets of gold. Refrain: When we all get to heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, Weâ€™ll sing and shout the victory! And now Al is living this song. How wonderful it was to be a friend of Al in adulthood , and as was Alâ€™s way, he loved us like Jesus. After being with Al, we felt almost as though we had been in the presence of God. Weâ€™re not sure we know anyone that showed the love of God like Al. Al was like a father to us. He made us feel special. He made us feel loved. But most of all he showed us Jesus. Al will be missed like few others. Al has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, he has kept the faith. Now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award Al on that day.

I remember Al's sermon in September, 2007 entitled What Next? My fiance and I attended and during the invitation my fiance, Bill, accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. One month later, unexpectantly, Bill passed away at 44 years of age. I will always be grateful for Al's message that day and how it influenced Bill's decision to come to Christ. I was able to thank Al later in October and now Bill can thank him himself in heaven.

I thank God for Al's example to me and all that I learned from him. My Faith is increased because of his Ministry to Our Lord. I Pray God's Blessing to his Family.

Al was a man of deep compassion, a man of love, and a man in love, with Jesus! Al was truly "sold out" for Jesus. Al was also a man of great courage and Spirit-filled wisdom. In the face of a difficult church leadership problem, he stood steadfast and followed God's Spirit as best he could. This was his and Anne's church and when the church split and hundreds of people left the church, he and Anne stayed with Grace to help us heal, and to help us get back on God's path and doing what God was calling Grace to do. At one point, Al heard God's call to become Interim Pastor of Grace and he risked his health, and his life, to do so and follow God's leading. With humor, great story-telling, and a great deal of wisdom, he led the church, and many of us individually, to a closer relationship with Jesus. There has never been a day in the past sixteen years I've known Al, that he hasn't pointed to God, and led others to God through his encouragement, great wit, story-telling, correction, etc. To me, Al was always an "Encourager", every day, and in every way. He suggested that we start sending out "Encouragement" cards to bring joy and caring to others who might need a touch of God's love. He would walk through the church and shake hands and give hugs to everyone. He made everyone feel welcome, loved, and special!! He shined his "light" of Jesus to everyone he met! When I think of the perfect example of a man showing God's character, I think of Al. What he did most, though, every day, was to point to Jesus, and to show us what a real, authentic, and deeply close relationship was between himself and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He lived every day to love God and love others and his life was a living testament to his daily walk/ journey with Jesus. I am thankful to have known Al & Anne for many years, to be able to call them friends, to learn from both of them, and especially, to witness Al's life of Servanthood and his total "life witness" to the one true God!! What a blessing I've had in having Al and Anne in my life. I will miss Al very much, but he is with our Lord, and there is no greater joy than that!!

It seems there could not possibly be more to say than what has already been said about Al, yet at the same time there should be so much more to say about a man so loved... Al's smile lit a room, his teaching touched your heart, his handshake or hug made you believe he cared about you personally, his presence reflected Christ. He was authentic, powerful and humble; he was passionate about Christ, and served Him with his entire being, Al was a true leader. Thank you Anne and family for sharing Al with us, we will not forget him, or his example. Thank you Anne (and Al) for the privilege of seeing reflected in your eyes your love, care and respect for one another; what an example of marriage you have given. Thank you Lord for gifting us with such a beautiful example of a life well lived for your glory, we will be enternally grateful for the privilege of knowing this man. Love, Gary and Jessica Cichocki

Dear Ann and family; We thank God for Al and the privilege to have known him. He touched our lives in so many ways. His faith was an inspiration to us. To the family of Al Kuhnle, I am so sorry for the great loss and deep pain you are experiencing right now, but I hope you will be comforted knowing that so, so many people were touched by Al in the way he loved people and loved the Lord and never lost hope. Al will always be in my heart for the way he influenced my daughter when she was 15, and a new Christian. She had so much love and respect for Al it is hard to put it into words here. She would say,"Mom you have to come hear Al speak, there is no one like him, his message is about love...For this and for a time he prayed with me recently, for this same daughter, I will be forever grateful. Thank you for allowing Al to be a part of all of our lives and for encouraging him so he could be an encouragement to us. My family will be praying for the Kuhnle family...

May God put his arms around this family and continue to bless them. Al may be gone but he won't be forgotten. God Bless.

I was so sorry to hear of your great loss, at the passing of Al. Indeed it is true he is in a much better place, but I am sure that your grief is ever on your mind. and your heart must be heavy missing him. Thank God that we have the blessed hope that we will one day see our loved ones again. In the book of Job, one of the oldest books in the bible, Job asked this question, over six thousand years ago: â€œIf a man die, shall he live again?â€(Job 14:14). Praise God, he answered it, in chapter 19, verse 25: â€œI know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earthâ€. The apostle Paul said, â€œ And now, dear brothers, I want you to know what happens to a Christian when he dies so that when it happens, you will not be full of sorrow, as those who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and then came back to life again, we can also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him all the Christians who have diedâ€. Dear Anne and Kuhnle Family, We could almost hear the Lord proclaim "Well done my good and faithful servant!" when the news came of Al's passing. He was a beacon of God's love and because of his servent's heart, we hope that beacon will continue through us and all those who knew him. I have never encountered another person who lived Christ's example the way Al did. And I am grateful to God that He placed him in our lives when He did. I'll never forget Al speaking about his calling and how passionate he was about winning others to Christ. But no matter what he did and how many came to Christ, he knew he had to do more. "One more" he said over and over holding back tears. "I have to reach one more." His boldness to preach the Gospel through his tender, genuine heart was remarkable. I have only had the privilege of meeting Al a few times over the years. But I know my family was very close to Al and had many fond memories for over 70 years. They always spoke so highly of Al. I am Ed & Betty Russell's daughter. John Newitt is my mom's brother and dear, long time friend of Al's...along with so many others. So I am writing to represent my folks. I know they would so very much like to be there today to honor Al and his life here on this earth. Mom is not able to get out much anymore but always spoke so highly of Al and his love for the Lord & all the good works he accomplished for his Savior & King. I just wanted you to know that I have prayed for you and your family as you say goodbye to dear Al. He was always an encouragement and wonderful friend to our family. When Pastor Van Loon's family needed a pastor we looked to Al. I am sure that he is taking in all of heaven and reuniting with so many that he ministered to here on earth. Dear Al's Family, Dotti and I first met Al while we were serving at Calvary Church in Grand Rapids. Al was with Gospel Films. Years later Al and I did a daily radio program from the Christian station in Detroit. Al has been a dear friend down through the years and a faithful man of God. Our YFC alumni family in Heaven is growing each year and just thinking about the welcome Al must have received from his "old" friends brings a smile. Al was always in the center of activity, motivating others with his energy and zeal. I cannot picture Al without a smile or a laugh on his face. Sharing YFC as well as being neighbors on Ridgewood Av in Grand Rapids while our children were growing up, bring memories of busy by-gone years. But the "older" Al, we enjoyed while visiting Florida was a happy man, blessed by God; still motivated, excited about the next idea, but content and deeply in love with Ann, God's gift to him for his remaining years. Al's love for his God, his children and Ann was evident. May this, dear family, be a comfort as you grieve your loss. Absent from the body present with the Lord. What a joy for Al! Al was always a very positive influence on my life since the early 1960's when I would sneak into the meetings where he spoke to teenagers during the summers at VCY's Pine Hills Camp in Brighton, MI. I was too young to be a camper but my cousin Bob Vaden allowed me to work at the camp in the kitchen. I was challenged and inspired even as a pre-teen. I remember the VCY boat cruises and Saturday Night Rally's at the Masonic Temple. Al always kept ministry exciting and inspiring. Years later I was privileged to work at Detroit's VCY/YFC from 1972 through 1993 with troubled / at-risk teens. Al presided over my ordination in 1978. God often used Al in my life and he inspired me to continue my ministry in Youth for Christ ministry in Detroit as he counceled me to follow my calling. I can still hear his voice and life-song of being found faithful. God used him many times to speak into my life. Al was sort of a hero of the faith and lived his life out loud, and transparent. He used to say that each person God brought across our path was an opportunity to minister and be used of God in a special way. Many have come and continue to come to faith in Christ through Al's faithfulness to God's call and his investment in so many other people's lives. I thank God for his life and on my every remeberence of him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Al's family. We were just "rookies" when we first met Al Kuhnle at national YFC gatherings. He was one of the mentors of us who were young and eager to learn. Al and Detroit VCY set the pace and taught us the heart and the faith to keep reaching lost kids! We'll always be grateful. Love from the Pacific Northwest Ralph and LeAnn Fry
