

Alexander Georgopoulos Sr. passed away on Saturday October 15, 2011 after a short illness. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on January 6, 1925 to Adamont and Aglaia Georgopolous, the youngest of 7 children. The family moved to Detroit where he attended Southeastern High School. He was a member of the ROTC where he achieved the rank of Brigadier General. He graduated in 1943. A proud veteran of WWII, he served in the South Pacific on Guam, Saipan, and Tinian. He was an uncompromising patriot to the United States until the end of his life. After returning to the states, he attended the University of Utah, graduating with a degree in Pharmacy. He returned to Michigan where he worked at the JL Hudson Co. as a buyer for all their pharmacies. In October of 1955 he married Constance Deana Deligianis and settled in Grosse Pointe Woods. They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. He was active in his church serving as a council member. He particularly enjoyed having theological discussions with his brother Agamemnon and Father Demetrios Kavadas. He was a Mason, and took great pride in his country. His hobbies and interests included travel, reading, and Greek history and mythology. He took many trips with his family to Greece and Puerto Viarta, Mexico. He took great pride in family, his number one priority. He was very close to his brothers and sisters and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers George, Panos, and Agamemnon, and his sisters Antigone and Katherine. He is survived by his wife Deana, his children: Gaia Georgopolous (Ron Hoffman), Alexander Georgopolous Jr. (Mary Ann), a sister Athena Cairo, his grandchildren Stephanie Georgopolous, Reese Jones, John Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. A Trisagion will be recited at 7:30 pm. He will lie in state on Thursday from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral at 10:00 am at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Rd., St. Clair Shores, MI. Interment at Clinton Grove Cemetery in Clinton Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
