

Alexandria Mallos, age 89, died peacefully on February 5, 2012 at Sunrise on Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods. Alexandria was born on August 11, 1922 in Detroit, the daughter of Gust and Anthy Papista. Her family lived on Mt. Elliott Avenue and as a youngster, she worked in the family's restaurants. After high school, she went to nursing school and graduated in 1948 from Henry Ford Hospital as a registered nurse. Mrs. Mallos worked for several years at Henry Ford Hospital as an OB-GYN nurse. She also worked at the J. L. Hudson Company as a nurse in their company clinic. She took two years off when her daughter was born and then went back to Hudson's until she retired in 1968. Alexandria met her husband George through a Greek social club. He went off to Iwo Jima and their courtship resumed when he returned home from the war. They were married in 1950 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Detroit. They made their home in Detroit until moving to St. Clair Shores in 1968. Mrs. Mallos enjoyed needlepoint and growing orchids. When she moved from her home in St. Clair Shores, many of her orchids were given to the Conservatory on Belle Isle. Two hobbies she enjoyed with her husband were golf and travel. They visited many places including China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and many European countries including Greece. Alexandria is survived by her daughter, Georgia Mayer (Martin); her sister, Theano Johnson (George); her sister-in-law, Louise Papista; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceaced by her husband George in 2009 and her brother Manuel Papista. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. Trisagion prayers will begin at 7:00 o'clock Wednesday evening. On Thursday her body will lie instate at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 707 East Lafayette in Detroit from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral begins at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Athanos George will officiate. Interment will follow at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East in Clinton Township. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be directed to either the Annunication Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 707 East Lafayette, Detroit, MI 48224 or the Great Lakes Caring Hospice, 900 Cooper Street, Jackson, MI 49202.
