

PETERSON Alfred Peterson, age 97 passed away March 25, 2011 in Grand Rapids, formerly of Warren, MI. He was born January 30, 1914 in Brevitor (Duluth), Minnesota and later moved to Sebeka, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife Viola (Johansen) Peterson of Menahga, MN married 38 years & their infant son, Kenneth, his parents Hjalmer and Anna (Matson) Peterson, 2 brothers, Arthur & Royce, as well as his second wife Marion (Andrich) Peterson of 31 years. As a young man in MN, he graduated from Coyne Electrical School, Chicago to become a licensed-certified electrician within the Detroit area to begin his family life with Viola, settling in Royal Oak. He worked with R.P. Scherer Corporation, Detroit for 29+ years until he retired. He and Marion were married in 1974 & moved to Warren. During that time they were active at a local roller skate rink & enjoyed traveling to Alaska & Hawaii as members of the Detroit-based NOMADS travel club. They were also active members of "The Church of The Master" of Warren. Al was a consummate "handyman", enjoyed many years of bowling until he discovered golf which was his favorite sport for 40 years. He was a health-conscious, true gentleman. He also was a big fan of the Detroit Tigers. He enjoyed telling stories of his life experiences especially as a young man on the farm or looking for work in "greener pastures". He is survived by his son Alfred and Patricia (Dodge), grandchildren Darryl and Janey Peterson, Stefanie and Todd Douglas, daughter, Karen and Ron Modreski, sister Dorothy Marsh of Wisconsin, step-daughter Sharon Springborn, grandchildren Kristin and Bob Bryant, Kerry and Jim Ellis, 11 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in memory of Al, designated to "Van Andel Pavilion/ Nursing" sent to: Holland Home, 2100 Raybrook SE Suite 300, Grand Rapids, MI 49546-5783. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. Holland Home is a benevolent, faith-based "home" where Al resided 2+ years until his death. His family is most grateful for the loving care he received at Van Andel and "faith Hospice". He will be dearly missed. The family will greet relatives and friends Sunday, March 27, 2011 from 4-6 pm. Funeral service will be held on Monday, at 10 am. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak.
