

Anna Mae Downes, age 96, died peacefully on December 26, 2015 at The Rivers in Grosse Pointe Woods. Anna was born on March 3, 1919 in Detroit; the daughter of Arthur J. and Mary P. Trombly. She grew up in Grosse Pointe Park and graduated high school at St. Ambrose. Ann was employed as a secretary for several years in Detroit's Fisher Building before she married James Downes in 1943 at St. Ambrose. The young couple lived in Detroit for a few years before moving to St. Clair Shores in 1952. She was known for her unassuming elegance and kindness. Ann enjoyed being with her family. She was very involved in her grandchildren's lives when they were young. She also enjoyed reading and playing cards. In her youth, she spent summers in Anchorville and maintained a fondness for the water her entire life. She loved to ice skate in her youth. Ann is survived by her three children; James J. Jr. (Nancy), Mary Reid (Thomas) and Sally Lombardo (Roy); her six grandchildren, Julia Kato (Eric), Brian Downes (Jen), Lucy Hannah (Brad), John Reid (Pankti), Matthew Lombardo and Caitlin Lombardo; three great-grandchildren, Eva and Elissa Kato and William Hannah and her sister, Rosemary Monaghan. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 o'clock Tuesday evening. She will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack in St. Clair Shores from 11:30 a.m. Wednesday until the funeral mass begins at 12 noon. She will be interred privately at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. The family has suggested memorials be made to The Capuchins, c/o The Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order, Attn: Development Office, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street; Detroit, MI 48207.
