It’s hard to wrap up all of my favorite memories of my grandma in one tribute on a website post. She was caring, kind, and nurturing. She was also stubborn and fought for what she believed in. She lived a life surrounded by love and nature and happily watched it grow throughout the years to include her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her laugh was infectious, her hugs were warm and deep, and her hands were the most perfect to hold. She gave lessons about planting flowers, vegetables, the weather, and native Michigan birds. She shared her love of cooking and taught us about where our family came from. We are all a little better for having known her and grateful to be called her family. Thank you for all the love you shared grandma!

Paula, Micky, Kenny,Carol,Margaret,Jeffery.  Mrs. Shaheen!!!  Pretty amazing.  It’s really hard knowing all the good ones are gone.  She was such a wonderful person with a great presence in life.    How many people do you know that can say she was the mom down the street and also my brothers mother in law!  The love they shared. We were so lucky to have her in our lives since I can remember.  Since I started to ride a bike.  I enjoyed every holiday, every moment. I had with her.  I truly am going to miss her.    I know this is so hard for all of you!  Know I am thinking of all of you. Dear Shaheen family, we are so sorry to hear about cousin Ann  Marie’s death.  If there ever was a woman that could live forever, she is definitely it.  What a beautiful person who accomplished more in her life than others have in multiple lifetimes.  The legacy of love, sound values, hope, courage and charity will certainly live on through all of you.  Mom loved her and uncle Mike (my godfather) so much. Their presence at any event was always special. We definitely felt the love in our family from them.  I am confident you are well aware of how wonderful they were 💕What you my not know is the special impression Ann Marie unknowingly had on me.  From the time I was young, she was always such a good listener, consistently  asked questions, and her body language just exhibited care.  She was a teacher on the best of communication skills that one can only hope to emulate.  There was just a feeling of importance when she was present and I am forever grateful for that. Definitely add educator to her list of exceptional qualities  I KNOW how much it hurts to lose someone you love so much.  Losing your mom is losing the one person you can still be a little kid with.  The ”growing pain” is for real. May you find peace in the beautiful memories you have and in knowing how much Ann Marie was loved and respected.  I am thankful we were able to visit a bit in the last few years and her communication skills and care never waned  I am envisioning a huge celebration and welcome party for her with all of those we love and miss. To my Shaheen cousins, Paula, Micky, Ken, Carol, Anne, Jerry (from heaven) and Jeff, my heart goes out to you for the loss of your mother.  Aunt Anne Marie and Uncle Mike were like a second set of parents to me.  Your mom was a lovely and gentle soul. I feel so grateful to have been able to be a close part of her life with all of you.  I will cherish my 50 plus years of loving memories of your mother, and carry them with me always.  I see the best part of Anne Marie in all of you, my cousins. Mom was an amazing caregiver, sharing her love and compassion with all of us.  She provided us with a wonderfully traditional home, where it was only later in life that we realized how hard she worked in doing that.   Outside of our immediate family, she loved the many years of sharing time with our large extended family at various gatherings.  Mom had a very rich life.  She was so happy this past year, sharp as a tack, and reluctant to give in to her aging body until the end.  She kept up a brave fight until the end, and left us peacefully to join my father and brother.

All I ever remembered growing up was how sweet cousin Anne Marie was.  When we did gather at weddings and other events she welcomed everyone with open arms. We are a large Lebanese family with many cousins but the Shaheens were so special to me growing up.   My mother, Mary McAlpin loved her cousin Mike and Anne Marie so much.  Now they are in heaven together taking care of each other and all of us.  Sending hugs, love and prayers to all of you. Paula, I truly feel so blessed that we were able to have a few outings with your sweet mom during these last few years. She was so gracious and very considerate of everyone. Cousin Anne Marie was such a warm and welcoming person.   Absolutely a kind and sweet soul.  I always enjoyed when our family would get together and was able to spend time with her and catch her up on our lives. I know my mom,  Annette loved her very much too.

Anne Marie was such a favorite of mine through all the years, so gracious and loving.  Paula and I keep in touch often by email and odd visits around the country, and last April (2019), I came to Michigan with my husband Chuck Davis, primarily to see Anne Marie, as she had passed her 90th birthday.  The day before we were to meet, Anne Marie was hospitalized for a respiratory infection, and we missed seeing her and Paula altogether.  Email notes to her through Paula were the best that could be done, however inadequate.  I will miss her.  ~ Joey Tamer, Santa Monica, California.
