

ARMANDO APESS Armando Apess, 85, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born to the late Ale and Alia (Mahmud) Apess on March 12, 1933, in Madero, Mexico. The fourth in a sibship of ten, Mr. Apess was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Alfredo, Esperanza, Dr. Camillo, Amira Nihem, and Lizda. He is survived by his sisters Zuraya Wright, Nora Romo, Ramsille, and Gloria, and many nieces and nephews. In 1978, Mr. Apess married Helen (Abdulhai) in Farouzi, Syria, and they had three sons: Armando (Monica), Alexander (Jessica), and Andrew (Christa), and six grandchildren: Annette, Emilia, Jacob, Henrik, Alexa, and Adrianna. Mr. Apess immigrated to the United States in 1948, eventually settling in Detroit in 1952. He worked as a waiter in some of Detroits elite establishments, which included the Caucus Club and the famous London Chop House. After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army, he returned to Detroit to open his own restaurant in 1965, the "Acapulco," specializing in authentic Mexican cuisine. Located on East Jefferson Avenue across from Belle Isle, the Acapulco would become one of Detroits premier Mexican eateries and the favorite haunt of many local celebrities, including several mayors of Detroit and many auto barons. Known for his gregarious, robust personality, Armando would routinely entertain his guests with pitchers of his signature "Margarita" and "steak Tampiquea." After retiring from the restaurant business, he established "Armando and Sons," a jewelry store in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, where he worked with his three sons for a number of years, finally retiring in 2013. Mr. Apess passions included traveling the globe with his wife and children, visiting Caesars Windsor, cooking specialty dishes for friends and family, and serving his community. He will be deeply missed by many who cherished his friendship and society. Funeral March 19th, Monday , 12 noon, A.H.
