

Arthur J. Berendt, age 84, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at St. John Hospital in Detroit with his family at his side. Arthur was born on October 30, 1926 in Detroit, the son of Edward and Mary Berendt. He attended St. Catherine Elementary and High Schools, graduating in 1944. In the 5th grade, he met Eleanor (Dolly) Walkoviak and they were sweethearts from then on. After high school, Arthur served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946.. As an infantryman, he saw action in Okinawa, Japan and Seoul, Korea. When he was discharged from the Army he began his career with Michigan Bell Telephone. Through the restructuring of the telephone utilities, Michigan Bell became A.T.& T. and finally Ameritech. Mr. Berendt was a sales and marketing manager and was a key salesman for the earliest telephone answering devices. After 41 years of employment, he retired in 1988. Arthur's hobbies included golf, bowling, bridge, casino gaming, the Grosse Pointe Theater and travel. He was a former member of the St. Clair Golf Club and the Golden Hawk Golf Club. He was actively involved at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church and Bishop Gallagher High School where he served two terms as president of the Dad's Club. Mr. Berendt is survived by his wife Eleanor (Dolly); two children, Gregg Berendt (Julie) and Karol Berndt (Carl); and his five grandchildren (who he constantly bragged about) Sean, Kristen, Colleen, Lauren and Meghan. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. A scripture service will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mr. Berendt will lie instate at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 20955 Bournemouth at Harper Avenue in Harper Woods from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Following cremation, inurnment will be at St. Paul on the Lake's columbarium in the spring.
