Betty Joan Mayer was born on June 17th, 1928 in what was then the small town of Centerline, Michigan. She was raised, with her sister Virginia DiCicco, by her loving mother, Gertrude Hartsig, in Centerline where she was surrounded and supported by a close network of her mother's relatives. Betty met the love of her life, Dick Mayer, on a blind date set up by her Uncle Jon Buechel. Both her Uncle Jon and future husband were artists working at the Detroit Free Press at the time. Betty and Dick Mayer were married on June 30th, 1956 and enjoyed 52 years of marriage together. They had three children: Gary Mayer, Lisa Ertzbischoff, and Kim Mayer. Later in life, Betty was thrilled to have and immensely enjoyed her four grandchildren: Tess and Ava Mayer (by her son Gary) and Natasha and Maximilian Ertzbischoff (by her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Robert). Betty was an extremely devoted, generous, and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2012. Betty will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, sister and her close friends: Katie and Arnold Viohl and Dave and Isabelle Smith, to name a few. It is our belief that Betty is now reunited with the love of her life, Dick Mayer, in a better place. Visitation will be held on Monday from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. She will lie instate on Tuesday from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack, St. Clair Shores. Betty will be entombed next to her beloved husband Dick at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 20300 Civic Center Drive, Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48076-4166.
