Former Grosse Pointe Woods resident Betty ("Bette") Savage passed away Thursday, June 21, 2012 after a brief but valiant fight with cancer. Born August 15, 1929, in Detroit the daughter of Dean and Gertrude (Yon) Keller, Bette was graduated from Denby High School and then Eastern Michigan University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She was an Art Teacher in the Birmingham Public Schools and a dedicated homemaker to her family. Bette was active in the community and socially. She was a member of the Mariners Church Yachtswomen Organization since 1969, and she and her husband Don were members of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club since1969. At the GPYC she bowled, golfed, played tennis and she and Don chaired the Club's annual ski weekend at Boyne Mountain. An active traveler she enjoyed her trips to Italy, Jamaica, or "out west" to ski, where her favorite places were Sun Valley and Aspen. A love for skiing led Bette and Don to buy a condo "up north" at Boyne Mountain, and she remained an active skier until age 81. It was summer, however, that Bette loved best because summer meant boating. She and Don enjoyed boating for almost fifty (50) years, touring and fishing the Great Lakes. The North Channel, Georgian Bay and Oscoda were favorite destinations. Retirement meant a new home for Bette and Don on 110 Acres in Bad Axe, MI. Bette loved having deer in the yard and frequently named them. She joined the Ubly Country Club where she was on a ladies golf league. She could also frequently be found back in the city for one of her grandchildren's sporting or school events, or lunch at the club with good friends. Bette is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Donald Savage, and their sons, Barry (Heidi) and Leigh, both of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, as well as the grandchildren she adored; Andrea of Healy, Alaska, Brady and Adam both of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. She was preceded by her parents and her brother, Jack. She is also survived by her nieces Kim Keller of Silver Springs, MD, and Kit Keller of North Carolina, as well as her nephew Kurt Keller of Silver Springs, MD. Interment will be in the family plot in Franklin, MI with a private memorial service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent in her name to The Mariners Church, 170 East Jefferson Ave., Detroit, MI 48226
